Hi group,

My name is Jeff, I am 21 years old and come from Airdrie in Central
Scotland. I just subscribed to this newsgroup and am looking forward to
having many discussions with you all here in the future.

I am a season ticket holder in the Govan rear, exit 11 and a proud
shareholder!

OK, I'm just in from the pub after watching yet another nailbiting 1-0
game at "fortress" Ibrox! I'll just talk about what I've read in the
messages here.

First, Ian Ferguson.

In my opinion, he should never be out of the first eleven. He is one of
the only, if not THE only, current player who is 100% Rangers, red, white
and Blue, Queen and country, do or die etc. He has the ability, the
attitude, the fight and the leadership qualities that the team has been
lacking in recent weeks. If only we had another 10 like him!

What about Klos?

Well, I feel for Niemi, but at the end of the day, has he got that split
second reaction that "THE Goalie" had? Or the fluid and speedy frame that
Charbonnier has used in the first half of the season? I agree that he hasn't
done anything wrong or made any major blunders but I think that Lionel and
Stefan have that something extra to enhance the Ranger's strength at the
back. The big question is,what happens when Charbonnier AND Klos are fit?
Who is Dick's first choice? I have a feeling it's gonna be Klos.

Today, I saw Amoruso play a blinder - he was outstanding. There is no
doubt the big man has the ability, but does he have the temperament and,
most importantly, the character to be the captain? I have my doubts.

One must feel sorry for Colin Hendry. Surely he is the man for the
captaincy? I wasn't a huge fan of Joachim Bjorkland but he could certainly
man-mark and would perhaps be a good partner for Hendry - better than Amo?

The whole Italian issue is a problem to me. I was very happy to see them
sign - Amoruso, Porrini, Gattuso and Riccio. They may have played in Serie
A, but, they are not suited to our game. If Lorenzo hadn't handled against
Parma, if Sergio hadn't been sent off against Parma, if Rino hadn't been
watching us against Parma!

Now, that they've signed and I've seen them well, I just don't feel
happy about them. The one I liked was Rino and he's gone! Anyway, I'll
reserve judgment....for now!

As for signing Petrescu, another foreigner? Would I be alone in longing
to see a Rangers team made up of eleven Scottish Protestants? I know it's
the new era and we're reaching the Millenium but surely we should all stand
for the Union Jack, the Queen etc. Along the years, we've seen some great
players become "Rangers" - Terry Butcher, Mark Hateley, Ray Wilkins, Rod
Wallace, Jorg Albertz. These guys have come and realised what it's all about
and that makes me happy. But, what about Kanchelskis, Amato, Negri, Laudrup,
Cleland, Amoruso etc. Do/did they play for the badge or the money?

I look forward to reading your comments.

I think that Cleland and perhaps Laudrup were commited to the cause.
About the eleven Scottish protestants how would we be able to create a
team that is able to compete in Europe with eleven Scots. How many of
the top European sides in the past five years have been composed
entirely of home nationality players.

I agree on you on most points that you have stated, except for the 11
Scottish Protestants. The list of players that you have given about
players becoming "Rangers" are all English except for Albertz, who is
Catholic. Now I dont want to get into an arguement about religion,
but surely it is now time that we move on and not live in the past. I
dont care what a player's religion/colour/race is, just as long he
does a job for Rangers.

Whether you like it or not this is the way it will always be, Rangers
& Celtic are where they are today because of it. Jeff states that he
is 21, I am 20 we are the future, not the past.

I agree 100% with what Jeff said, the only thing i would add is that
the team should ideally be made up of eleven Scottish or ULSTER
Protestants.

Let me get this straight, you want to pick a player not simply on his
talents but because he is a Monarchist and a British Nationalist? If this
wasn't a Rangers ng, I'd assume that you were joking...

Tell me, were you born a nut, or was it something in your upbringing?
Surely we should all stand for (a) a symbol of global imperialism, and (b)
a symbol of unearned, inherited, wealth, power and inequality? No thanks.

Can't you even get your bigotry right? Why don't you try "Scottish or
Northern Irish Protestants"? You won't find many Rangers fans amongst
Protestants in Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal, I'm afraid. Most of them are
more interested in Gaelic football, and if they had to watch Scottish
soccer would probably have more time for Celtic.

Phew!

At last, someone agrees with me.

I don't think we will ever see a team made up of 11 Scottish players but
hey, I can dream can't I?

And anyway, even if we don't have proddies in the team, at least there are
50,000 of us watching and goodness knows how many others worldwide.

If Laudrup and Cleland were committed to Rangers, why would they want to
leave. Look at REAL Rangers like Ian Ferguson, John Greig, Ian Durrant etc.
They would never ask to leave.

No Surrender!

In an ideal world Rangers would have a team of eleven protestants, all
committed to the cause and we would sweep all before us at home and
abroad. But lets face it, thats hardly likely to happen - its not
impossible, or at least it wouldn't be if we had a youth policy, its
just highly unlikely in today's world.

So lets just settle for eleven players committed to the cause of winning
trophies for Rangers. Lets get rid of the obvious merceneries (and I
think we all know who they are) and hire some mercenaries that at least
show some fight.

ULSTER is no longer known as a nine county province of Ireland. ULSTER
has six counties. Check most general knowledge books which ask
questions about Northern Ireland. i.e. What is Northern Ireland also
know as ? Ans. ULSTER.
Also you will be pleased to know that Rangers actually have a few
supporters clubs in Donegal after all it is 5% protestant.

When was this startling change made? Has anybody thought to inform all
those people living in Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal that they have somehow
been magically transported out of Ulster? Where are they located now?
Should we send them some maps, so they can find their way home? Dimwit.

> ULSTER
> has six counties.

I'm afraid not. Ulster has nine Counties, Northern Ireland has six
Counties. The occasional misuse of the term Ulster stems soley from a
couple of lost by-ways in the Unionist political past (ie their obsession
with creating a spurious mythological\national identity for Ulster,
originating in a time when Ulster Unionism was a nine County movement. When
Unionists in Northern Ireland abandoned Unionists in the rest of Ulster
they made some half hearted attempts to borrow the already spurious
"Ulster" legitimacy they had attempted to create for their lump of the
truncated Province alone). The term Ulster is has no legitimate or official
place in British or Irish legislation with regard to Northern Ireland.
In fact "Ulster" as a title for Northern Ireland is merely the Unionist
equivalent of "the Six Counties" for Nationalists.

> Check most general knowledge books which ask

That's all right, you occasionally get it in the British media too, it's
not my fault they are sometimes sloppy.

Donegal is a fair bit more than 5% Protestant, as are Monaghan and Cavan.
In those parts of Ulster though there is no serious sectarian conflict at
all, and few enough people of any religion support Rangers (Donegal has a
fair amount of Celtic fans for historical reasons to do with emigration and
seasonal work, but people in Cavan and Monaghan by and large don't take
much interest in your green and white striped rivals either). In all of
those 3 Counties the major sport amongst Catholics and Protestants alike is
Gaelic football.

Complete prick. Do you really think that the record books will show Ian
Ferguson to be a great Ranger ahead of Laudrup because he was a 'good
Proddie'. Pick any one of Laudrup's 4 seasons and they have been more
important to the club than the sum total of Ferguson's 10 years. You should

No, of course not. Neither do I support your green and white striped
rivals. As it happens I support Shelbourne (remember us? You knocked us out
of the UEFA cup, but we gave you a good run).

Presumably the next question is "So what are you doing in a Rangers ng?"...
Simple really. I had been arguing in uk.s.f about sectarianism in football,
and a couple of the more enlightened Rangers fans were claiming that the
club had changed, and that the sectarian scum were now an isolated
minority. I came over here for a look... and well this thread would seem to

Which bit? That there are few Rangers fans amongst Southern Irish
Protestants? Come for a visit and ask some. There are certainly one or two,
but that's it
.
That the largest sport amongst Protestants in the 3 Ulster counties on this
side of the border is Gaelic football? Easy enough to do logically, given
that almost no other sport is played on a regular basis there. It may come
as a shock to you, as a Northerner, but like the rest of Europe the South
doesn't have,*ahem*,'sectarian difficulties'. The factors which vary which
sports are dominant are locality and class, not religion. I can testify at
first hand to this having played for GAA, Soccer, Cricket and Rugby teams.

Look, all this talk about religion is all a load of shite. As far as I am
concerned - and I hope most Rangers fans would agree with me - is I dont
give two fucks what a players nationality, race, religion or colour of their
skin, just as long they do a job for Rangers then thats all should concern
Rangers fans.

Lets get real we are nearly into the 21st century, we are not living in the
17th century.

50,000 supporters following a multi racial , multi national side and pricks
like yourself still claim we are living in the old days . Rangers will
always have Protestant traditions . If the Rangers players can live with
this and respect this then why can't you ?

Mutual respect for differing cultures is evident at Ibrox . Obviously there
are a few bears who are more radical but if someone stated fifteen years
ago that Rangers would field a side including many Catholics and that the
support would respect this , you would have carted then off to the funny
farm .

It gets up some peoples noses that Rangers can still be a cosmopolitan club
with Protestant traditions .

My problem is not with the existence of Rangers, but the bigotry of a
section of it's support. I do not suggest that all Rangers fans are
sectarian, but I do find it relatively shocking to see people coming out
with the sort of bigotry Jeff spouted and then to see them tolerated (and
even agreed with) by other posters (some honourable exceptions aside).
Football should not be about religion.

Actually, my ISP doesn't carry alt.sports.soccer.celtic. I did look for the
Celtic newsgroup at the same stage as this one, so I'm afraid I can't do as
you suggest.

I have no doubt that Celtic also count a number of bigots amongst their
support, and that is just as disgraceful. If you are worried about it, why
don't you go there yourself and berate their quota of scumbags yourself? If
you do it in a non-partisan manner (ie if you don't just wander in shouting
insults) you'll probably get a reasonable response.

The thing I do find shocking is the lack of outrage amongst most of the
decent Rangers fans when somebody starts mouthing sectarian crap (again
some honourable exceptions apart). They don't encourage the scumbags
(mostly) but a fair number of people just let them away with it. Why should
an outsider be doing something you really should be doing yourselves?

Have you seen the sales figures for PCs over x-mas, Ronnie? As the
popularity of the net increases
so, unfortunately, does the numbers of tossers using it.

Oh, btw, Alan, being, as you seem to be, about 9 years old you won't
remember the pre- Souness era,
when "a team of eleven protestants, all committed to the cause" got us
gubbed regularly home and away by the likes of the Tims, Sheepshaggers,
Arabs et al.

The world where we are 10 points clear, with a team full of talent which
will only get better, one of the best coaches in the world and a great deal
of respect for our performances in Europe this year seems pretty ideal to
me.

Sorry, had my PC a bit longer than that. I also don't hide behind email

Did you read my entire post, or just the bit quoted.

I can't understand why so many people are aligning themselves with this
person. Afterall, if he's so non-sectarian, why does he feel the need
to declare himself a 'Tim'? And before all you new-age Gers fans get
too uppity - I'll bet you all sing the songs, you know, the ones about
'up to our knees in fenian blood', etc.

The sad thing about this is I'm one of the most reasonable Rangers fans
you'll ever meet and certainly would not consider making bigoted remarks
out with Ibrox and Rangers (and I can't explain why I do so in that
arena, but I would challenge any Rangers fan who has followed the team
home and away for any length of time who claims to have no bigotry in
them), I just feel someone has to point out the hypocrisy going on
here.

Because sometimes he talks sense where others talk shite?

Self-awareness is not an indication of sectarianism, bias against others
is. By the same token nationalism needn't necessarily be equated with
fascism/nazism.

the 1970s, remember, was a period when only about 5 or 6 other European
countries played any football worth a damn, now it's about 25. Things were
easier then. Your team of EPACTHC would find themselves on the end of a
severe drubbing now by most teams they faced.

...people align themselves with Mr the Tim because, when he's not talking
about football, he talks a lot of common sense.....and how is 'Tim' a
sectarian term, btw?

well, this "new age" Gers fan (first game was Airdrie in 1966...how old
were you then, Alan?) knows the words but chooses which ones to sing. What
the fuck does being up to your knees in blood or having a rifle or a pistol

...if you are only prepared to make sectarian and bigoted remarks in 'safe'
company, I'd reckon that makes you pretty hypocritical.

I have followed Rangers home and away for over 30 years and I have no
bigotry in me. I dislike Celtic intensely, I feel a mixture of pity,
contempt, respect and loathing for them and many (most?) of their
fans....but bigotry? no.

Sorry, I never read, touch or buy the Catholic Gazette aka Daily Record.

If they don't then they should go support thistle.

The fact is that Rangers Football Club is based on a foundation of Red,
White and Blue.

"It represents the Protestant, Unionist, Masonic tradition and has become
institutionalised in defence of these things." - Rangers player by player by
Ferrier and Mcelroy.

In today's world all these things are threatened what with the recent plague
of Scottish Nationalism, the removal of sanctions on Sinn Fein etc... true
blue people, like me, fear for the future of our country.

By no means will we ever give up our beliefs - "He who forgets history is
destined to repeat it".

I have a question, why do these rebels fly Irish tri-colours and sing the
Soldier song and hate the Queen, union etc... yet continue to live here in
Great Britain? If Ireland is so great why don't they all go live there?

That old statement is true - they never bomb the Post Offices because after
they kill and maim innocents they have to go pick up their British paid
Giro!

Don't tell me all that is in the past because that is a naive and gullible
thing to believe.

Anyway, I don't like talking about all this religious stuff when we're here
to talk football but as has been stated many times before, when the football
we're on about is Old Firm football then you just can't get away from the
old Billy and Tim argument.

Sorry if this message is a bit disorganised but these are just the things I
feel strongly about and I hope you will understand my sentiments.

No it ain't, and "good" Currant Buns know that.

For sad gits like you this seems eminently true.

And true green people like me, and no doubt many of your own "true
blues" fear for the future of this great wee country while the
albatrosses of UK unionism hang round it's neck.

>By no means will we ever give up our beliefs - "He who forgets history is

He who forgets history is destined to repeat his Higher in it.

Well, most of us were born here, most of us are proud to be descended
from Irish immigrants and many of us (most?) are equally proud to be
Scots. I'm not one for singing the Soldiers' Song but why on earth
should I be shipped out of the country for my intense dislike of those
royal wank bags and the artificial and undemocratic "union". I suppose
you'll deport all West Indian immigrant descendants for supporting The
Windies at cricket tests as well. BTW, where exactly do you expect to
ship me off to? Since you seem to be convinced that all Celtic fans are
(Irish) rebels looks like Donegal for me whether I like it or not.

You are Enoch Powell and I claim my fiver.

Why would anyone bomb somwhere that would be much more lucratively
robbed?

Naive and gullible describes yourself and any other saddo inclined to
subscribe to the pejorative pish you dribble.

You started it (just about).

Feel as strongly as you want. Yep you are a bit disorganised but that
is because of your sentiments. I undestand them 'fooly' enough but I
refuse to accept them as adding anything positive to the future of
Scotland.

Ok dodo brains: because ALL Celtic fans call themselves this.

When I first came on the net I chose this nick to differentiate myself
from all the other Ronalds, Rons and Ronnies out there. If it was a
sectarian term my wife (member of the C of S and from fine Orange stock)
would hardly describe herself as a Tim, but she does.

Let me rephrase then, do you really think that every true Rangers fan

shares your need to shout sectarian abuse?

> The fact is that Rangers Football Club is based on a > foundation of Red,

As far as I recall, RFC was not founded with any particular political
ethos, and indeed helped support the nascent Celtic FC.

> "It represents the Protestant, Unionist, Masonic tradition > and has

To many people in Glasgow, Rangers is their local club and they support it
not because they are lunatic bigots, but because they are football fans.

> In today's world all these things are threatened what with > the recent

> of Scottish Nationalism,

Scottish Nationalism is hardly a recent phenomenon (although it has
certainly grown in recent years). It might be of interest to you that up
until recent years Scottish Catholics were less likely to support
independence than Scottish Protestants, and given that they make up 13% of
the population it would hardly help your cause to associate Scottish
Unionism with a virulent anti-Catholic prejudice.

> the removal of sanctions on Sinn Fein

Which sanctions would they be? SF were not an illegal organisation at any
stage since the 1920's.

> By no means will we ever give up our beliefs - "He who > forgets history

This seems to be a non sequiter point. I do not advocate that anybody
forgets history. In fact, as a history student, I have a vested interest in
the other direction...

> I have a question, why do these rebels fly Irish tri-colours > and sing
the
> Soldier song

Most probably because they are descendants of Irish immigrants, and are
proud of that fact.

> and hate the Queen,

They hate the Queen because the vast majority of rational human beings on
this planet believe monarchy to be morally indefensible.

> union etc... yet continue to live here in

Yeah, and if those bloody "Paki's" want to cheer for Pakistan at cricket,
why don't they piss off back to Pakistan?

> That old statement is true - they never bomb the Post > Offices because

Are you suggesting that the Celtic supporters club bombs people? You seem a
little nutty to me, Jeff old boy...

> Don't tell me all that is in the past because that is a naive > and

The IRA (I presume you are referring to the IRA?) have been on ceasefire
(thankfully) for a long time. They are highly unlikely to break it, as long
as the Good Friday Agreement is adhered to.

So why did you bring it up?
