I'd be surprised if he did. This is how virtually every day of f-c
cricket at Lord's has been this season. The outfield is as slow as
waiting for the Halfwit to admit an error. The ball doesn't move much,
but it's not that easy to time shots.

At least on song, Anderson and Broad are better bowlers than any of
the NZ guys (though Broad at his best is only marginally better than
Boult). Finn is not on song, so we shouldn't expect an awful lot from
him - I presume they picked him because of his extra pace, which has a
chance of provoking a mistake. We'll find out whether Anderson and
Broad are by observing whether they have any success, since they are
potentially the best bowlers to have appeared at the ground this year.
If they're not at their best and are just OK, we can hope that the
likes of Rutherford, Taylor and McCullum will express themselves (as I
believe the current jargon has it), but they'll need to ride their
luck if we're to get much entertainment out of them.

The weather forecast currently suggests that the match will finish at
teatime on Sunday. It's not unlikely that those still awake at that
time will be mildly relieved that they don't have to pretend to enjoy
what they're watching any more.

For all we like to assert the supremacy of the five-day form, there's
no getting away from the fact that some Tests are deathly dull.

(Anyone suggesting that I'm only saying that in the hope of provoking
the woofing gods to make tomorrow interesting may well be on to
something.)

Cheers,

Mike

Yep, like a blancmange.

Which is perhaps understandable given the early season weather, but it is
somewhat ironic given the catalogue of comments during the recent series in
NZ from UK journalists, England bowling coach et al about the 'dead'
pitches. And they were slow and uninspiring, but these days everyone seems
very afraid of preparing anything which behaves differently from an
artificial surface, in case the match doesn't last five days.

The ball moved more than I expected during the morning session.

The outfield reminds me of the Test at Perth in 1985/86, when the pitch and
outfield had just been relaid and a grand total of 40 boundaries were struck
in 450 overs of cricket.

I don't share your rating of Broad, but suspect this is probably because
you've seen much more than I of him bowling well. That said, I wonder
whether you've seen much of Southee at his best. The form he produced in
Sri Lanka and India in 2012 was the equal of anything Broad is capable of,
although Southee is maddeningly inconsistent and seems to lose his action
rather frequently.

I don't see the NZ batsmen making hay on this pitch either, but at least
they should feel right at home. Leaving aside the pace bowling comparison,
there was evidence on day one that Swann could have a huge influence on this
match were it to be allowed to proceed without significant weather
interruption. Of course I am talking about the pre-op Swann and have no
idea whether he remains capable of producing that again or indeed has bowled
enough since coming back.

Lord's has also been relaid at LOCOG's expense following last year's
outdoor darts competition.

And thank goodness for that. Hopefully I will be proven wrong as New Zealand limp to 132/3 off 67 overs by the end of play but we do seem to be masters of late of "getting bogged down".

Test cricket certainly isn't Ha Ha for England based on the last 10 minutes of play.

The good news is that, if the run rate continues at 2 per over throughout
the match, then 222 in each innings should be enough to avoid defeat. Only
13 to go. ;o)

Ross Taylor has certainly made a mockery of our batting in custard so far. Well done Jimmy on 300. Now to see how Swann v1.2 gets on.

Apparently it's the first time in 78 years that each of the top 6 got
to 15 with none reaching 50.

It appears that Anderson is in pretty good nick, and Taylor managed to
ride his luck to good effect.

He looks to be capable of having an influence on a match now likely to
last until Sunday evening.

I don't think I shall go to the ground tomorrow. Two days of freezing
to death is enough for me. It must be deeply unpleasant to play out in
the middle, and I'm not surprised that batsmen in danger of
solidifying aren't being all that active out there.

People keep saying England has better bowlers and it ought to be true, but
based on the last four Test matches some of them are doing a very good job
of hiding it.

Although the newspaper headlines claim NZ is ahead after two days, the game
is about level. NZ's batting falls away rather quickly.

this series seems to have continued where the last one left
off, except its slower paced.

the suns out now, which ought to help our batters - at
least one of them i hope - to make a score on what
looks an easy paced wicket. however there
may be more rain on sunday and monday, so
unless england collapse quickly today it might
all end in stalemate.

Wagner who doesnt look that fast seems to be
having quite a bit of success against our batters
so far. Now Oz have got plenty of left arm pacers,
including the great Starc, so I hope this
isnt a portent for the ashes.

Looks like we have another belter unfolding from a slow start. Monday's weather looks pretty average apparently so tomorrow has the potential to be a corker of a day if they want a result out of this. I left the score at 160-odd for 2 so was slightly aghast to see us 6 down. Prior ha barely failed to make 20-odd in ccountless Tests up to now so his pair is quite a shocker.

Me too: Broad bowled very well but nothing like as well as his figures
suggest. The Fulton, Williamson and Southee dismissals were not the result
of good bowling and Bruce Martin doesn't count.

Of course Southee was also flattered by his bowling figures.

England's pace bowling attack is a bit better than NZ's, but the real
difference is in the relative batting qualities of the two teams.
