Extraordinary escape yet again - bravo to Collingwood (yet again -
mentally strongest player in the team?) and especially Bell - did the
job in quite spectacular style when the chips were well and truly down
- brilliant 4 3/4 knock under huge pressure of the new ball. Hopefully
this is the turning point - he has well and truly grown up and shown
some balls.

My ECB 2009 calendar had Bell's picture for December; ironic I thought.
Not so sure now, good luck to him. I've had doubts about Collingwood too :(

I was fortunate enough to be heading off into a meeting during the
last over, quite glad to be avoiding the result !! When I saw one of
the chief execs hugging my boss I knew we were safe. This afternoon
probably knocked a year off my life, but never mind, eh?
Even though we've almost lost 3 out of the last 8 Tests, hopefully
we've made a man of Bell here - the only thing that I wished had
happened today was seeing Bell not out at the end.

to be fair we have had it the other way around as well - in the West
Indies last time around we had then 8 down and 9 down at the end....

Just a pity Bell and Colly didn't last out to the end but that is just

On TMS they compared Collingwood to Trevor Bailey, which presumably
would make Bell Willie Watson. (I hope the parallel isn't too exact, as
after that Lord's Test in 1953 I don't think Watson did anything more of
note in Tests.)

Me too, but OTOH if he had, the "Bell has turned a corner" stories
would have been unbearable. Hopefully now they will be a bit more
subdued.
But wow. After a match like this, it shouldn't be too hard to convince
the rest of the world that Test cricket really is the best game there
is. Long may it prosper.

Very good point. I also forget he's still only 27 ! He's technically
excellent, from what those in the know say, so fingers crossed the
mental gaps are being filled.

With the Aus v Pak game also finishing yesterday - two games in 24-or-
so hours that undoubtedly prove it's the daddy of all the formats.

True enough. I was one of the 12,000 at the SCG to see the Pakistani's
throw away a victory, and then went home to watch the match at Cape
Town. Is there anyone watching or interested in the ODI series in
Bangladesh at present?

Not me. This innings at Newlands would not have quelled my doubts
about him had it not been for The Oval knock. But, two such innings in
four Tests as well as one of his speciality hundreds which swells a
good total to a massive one means he has at last found the kind of
adaptability we've been waiting for. Well, I've been waiting for,
anyway.
