Apparently the weather site, in its infancy, was named after the original
group as a student joke. I've always been rather surprised that the name
has persisted into the era of the weather site becoming well known; it
seems in slightly poor taste. I suppose it's at least partly because the
original WU didn't actually kill anyone.

Only in poor taste if you had actually heard of the terrorist
group, which I hadn't.

:)

I remember the Weather Underground group from the 1960s. I've no idea
why they called themselves that.

People are so easily offended these days. The group had an anti-Vietnam
War agenda, so quite a few will have at least have approved of its
goals, if not all its means.

The Weathermen (the more common name) were named after a line in
Dylan's "Subterranean homesick blues": You don't need a weatherman to
know which way the wind blows", according to Wikipedia, which has
aquite a good article on it.

My memory is that they play quite a big role in the Illuminatus
Trilogy, although it's years since I've read it, so could be wrong.

End of radical history lesson, back to pondering how boring September was here.

The m ? Sorry, Keith, couldn't help myself.
It doesn't take much to be considered a terrorist in the US. At that time
the majority of students and at least half the population were against the
war in Vietnam.

First of all, the idea that Bill O’Reilly says that I was in hiding.

I wasn’t in hiding. I was teaching and speaking and writing and doing
all the things I do. What I wasn’t doing was commenting on the
presidential campaign to the media.

We decided not to do that when this all began, because we couldn’t
figure out a way to interrupt what we took to be a profoundly
dishonest narrative that.

And what’s dishonest about it?

One is, I was not a terrorist.
I never was a terrorist.
And the idea that the Weather Underground carried out terrorism is
nonsense.

We never killed or hurt a person. We never intended to. We existed
from 1970 to 1976, the last years of the war in Vietnam.

The war in Vietnam was terror on a mass scale, with thousands of
people every month being murdered, mostly from the air. And we were
doing everything we could to stop it.

JUAN GONZALEZ: Well, Bill, for a lot of younger listeners and viewers
who may be not familiar with the Weather Underground could you talk
about how the Weather Underground developed and what were its goals?

BILL AYERS: When I was first arrested opposing the war in Vietnam was
the year that the United States built the war up, 1965.

At that time, I was arrested in the draft board with thirty-nine other
students trying to disrupt the normal activity of the draft board.

You know, one of the things to note about that arrest is, while thirty-
nine of us were arrested and while hundreds of students supported us,
thousands of students opposed us, because in 1965 the war was popular.

In retrospect, it’s hard to remember that.

Know what bugs me about this? The Weather Underground, back in the
day, WAS a terrorist groups and was willing to (had the courage to)
admit it. Now you try to whitewash it and say you weren't a terrorist
group. Bugs me is all.

I think what the professor wanted to clear up was the use of his
previous activities against Barak Obama. Senator Obama was no more
guilty of affiliation with him than were a number of other senior
political officials notable among them were some Republican ones.

And it was largesse from the host channel that permitted him an
opportunity to clear the other person of any name calling.

As far as bombing goes yes it was terrorism but the point was that
Senator Obama was uninvolved with any part of that.

The clip then goes on to show that this was an heated climate of
racist killings and deep seated unpopularities and that things changed
radically even then.

But it was in a pre Twin Towers - Al-Qa'ida era. And the deep
hostility that that act brought was being cynically used to deter
would-be voters and for that matter would-be Weather Underground
users.

I don't think I am massaging the facts. I don't know what was going on
in the USA at that time. I remember being confronted with that girl
wearing skin that thad been napalmed -and I gather now, that it was a
frequent occurrence.

I have met Boat People who have left behind family suffering the
effects of Agent Orange and they are violently angry with the USA over
it even now.

How much more angry do you think they are now that the USA is still
unrepentantly devastating whole regions of the planet? And at us here
where the sock puppet Tory B Liar got into bed with a chimpanzee!

YOUR BUGGED?

FFFecks ache!
