At Last!

At last, here in south Essex some decent rainfall although in the form of
showers, its been raining now for about an hour and a half.
You can almost hear the lawn and the plants drinking the water. Just hope it
lasts through the evening.

Unfortunately its timing could have been better. It seems to have
arrived just in time to prevent any play in this evening's scheduled
floodlit 20-20 cricket match between Essex and Surrey, which was to have
been played at Chelmsford.

bursts might have produced 5mm - the most for several weeks. It was such a
shock that the 19.30 UKMO radar went AWOL! Tom, I thought you'd got a fair
few showers last week, or was that more towards Chelmsford?

Quite incredible, here we are the 5th July and I'm over 50% rainfall
already, with 20.8mm having fallen in the first 5 days. Funny old summer
it's turning out to be, especially as it looks like 'real' summers
returning later this week and into the weekend.

Certainly got the thunder and lightning last week, but on each occasion the
rain was to the North or South of me.
Totals of 8mm this evening, enough to turn the grass green again hopefully

The great divide. Here in the Manchester area we heave a great sigh of
relief if it _doesn't_ pour down all day. Maybe we should install a pipeline
to get some of our floods down to where they're obviously needed.
Spare a thought for Spain and Australia though - our problems pale into
insignificance compared to theirs.

Yes indeed. Although a bit of a purist with my cricket I am taking to 20-20
(perhaps beating Australia helped!) and was looking forward to watching
Essex live.

And compared to Africa, Spain and Australia are rich beyond measure. At
least the Spanish and the Aussies can get help, have a reserve and most
importantly, have some security in their leaders, politicians though
they are.
Parts of Africa have floods now, political and economic destitution,
diseases and death. Quite literally the four horsemen are riding out
there, ruthlessly.
We can help somehow. God help us when its our turn if we don't, for
there
will be nothing else to turn to.
