The BBC wanted to dump TSAN a long time ago, before digital TV, as
they abandoned their public-service educational remit to become a semi-
commercial broadcaster, but there was some kind of contractual
obligation involved, so they cut it down and showed it at stupid
o'clock, being the least they could get away with. When BBC4 started,
it seems they were put under some pressure, Sir Patrick having some
influential friends, to give it a proper slot in peak-time, but they
were still contractually required to put the short version out on the
analogue service.
