ANNOUNCEMENT - NEW MAGAZINE FOR AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS

Astrum Publishing is pleased to announce the publication of a new
printed monthly magazine dedicated to amateur astronomers. The first
issue (June 2006) is being despatched from May 22nd.
Practical Astronomer is, as the title suggests, aimed directly at the
world's practising amateur, and is a more focused approach to this
modern evolving arena of astronomical imaging and observing.
The magazine is written for an English speaking audience and is full
colour throughout. It features a unique appeal to global amateurs.
Practical Astronomer deliberately sets out to invite and involve all
practising
amateurs into feeling a part of this global hobby, and to share and
exchange knowledge and experience for the benefit of all readers.
Practical Astronomer will provide the centre point; the meeting place
for all contributing aspects and faces of the global amateur
astronomical community.
Regular features will include:
In depth 'how to' articles on image acquisition, observing
techniques, image processing etc.
The most detailed and 'to the point' equipment reviews in
existence
Regular articles on 'understanding optics'
Meet an amateur - a regular interview with some of the top
amateurs in their field

Any chance of us knowing who is writing for this? Nothing said about it
(that I could find) on the web site. The domain name
(practicalastronomer.com) is registered to Eddie Guscott, whose
astrophotography ISTR coming across.

the editor. Many of the articles are unattributed (so done by the
editorial team, i guess) - others are by Chris Garvey (telescope
review) and Dale Holt (sky notes).
66 pages, nicely printed - glossy, colour throughout. A few minor
quibles but shows a lot of promise.
I have no connection with the mag. at all (btw).

This era reflects nothing other than an imbalance,the mathematical mind
squeezing out the intuitive faculties and ultimately squeezing out the
fundamental working principle for astronomy - geometry.
Even Kepler's accurate assigning of the role of mathematicians
(geometers) in the scheme of things no longer applies -
"To set down in books the apparent paths of the planets [viasplanetarum
apparentes] and the record of their motions is especiallythe task of
the practical and mechanical part of astronomy; to dis-cover their true
and genuine path [vias vero veras et genuinas] is . . .the task of
contemplative astronomy; while to say by what circle and lines correct
images of those true motions may be depicted on paper is the concern of
the inferior tribunal of geometers" Kepler
The dull mind knows how to be patient ,the creative and active mind
reluctantly learns to live with impatience.You are thus living up to
your mediocre expectations and suffer humanity to do the same The
exhuberance of creation withers under your linguistic tinsel for even
when you present observations through optics,you shunt it into
counter-productive opinions with no sense of direction other than to
congratulate yourselves.

In addition to the contributers you mentioned there are two who are
members at Guildford AS : Kev Smith who wrote "Kevin's Sun Spot" and
David Putland. The latter did all of the optical bench testing for the
SkyWatcher ED80 review, but hasn't been credited as far as I can see -
hopefully he'll get a mention in subsequent editions.
I agree with your assessment "shows a lot of promise" so I've signed
up! Yet another mag to find space for on the shelves :-)
