SURVIVING THE IRON AGE
The first series in the BBC's 'Living in the Past' history
project
Have you ever wondered what it must be like to live in the past?
Have you ever wanted to try? If so, this is your chance.
The BBC's new Living in the Past project is an exciting
commitment to present the rich history of the United Kingdom to a
wide, popular and diverse audience. These programmes will
recreate specific periods in the past and will challenge a group
of volunteers to live in that period of time, with as much
authenticity as possible. Living in the Past is therefore much
more than a series of films about history-it is how people
survived in a previous time in a living environment very
different from our own.
In the 1970s, the BBC produced a major series where four couples
lived in Iron Age conditions. In this first series in the Living
in the Past project, we plan to return to this period in
Britain, approximately 250BC.
We are therefore looking for a group of up to 16 volunteers to
live for six weeks as Iron Age Celts. You will be expected to
sleep in a roundhouse in a typical Iron Age hill-fort, cook, hunt
and maintain the settlement as the Celts did over 2000 years ago.
Filming will take place this year between mid-September and early
November 2000.
We are looking for people of all ages and backgrounds (including
families with children) and any previous knowledge of the Iron
Age period is not essential-you certainly don't need to be a
trained historian or archaeologist. The most important qualities
are a genuine interest in the project, the readiness to adapt and
improvise, the ability to get on with others, and the willingness
to make the most of this unique opportunity.
Through your experiences, the television audience will understand
the past in an exciting and radically new way. We also plan to
have a website and an associated book, which will allow us to
make the most of this unique educational opportunity. Why not

It seems that its going to be slightly different from the 70's series,
(whatever it was called!). The participants will spend 6 weeks living in
the Iron Age. The roundhouses will already be built and there will be
specific tasks through the 6 week period.
Also they seem to be disappointingly precise in the kinds of volunteers they
want...

Children of the participants in the original Iron Age series from the 1970s,
now in their early twenties (2-3 people)
Two couples with children (total 7-8)
An older couple in their early fifties (2 people)
One DV filmmaker on location all the time
An additional one or two single people, probably specialists such as a
blacksmith or a butcher
We would also hope that two or more of these volunteers will be recruited
locally." (Bristol/South West, I think).
Being single and not having a handy skill like blacksmithing, I don't think
my chances of selection are good. However, "....plans include living in the
following locations: an Iron Age fort, a Viking settlement, a Norman Castle,
a Medieval Manor house, a Pilgrim plantation, on the Oregon Trail".
A Viking settlement? Oh yes, indeedy! I think I'd pay for that one! *lol*
Mind you, I wouldn't mind the Norman Castle or Medieval Manor either!
