I think like any successful product the canals need to be marketed and
packaged properly and strongly promoted, possibly with a powerful and
convincing advertising campaign using television, press and the net
with the objective of convincing and educating Government, the opinion
leaders, leaders of industry, the city, and the general public at
large that the canals are Britains largest single leisure amenity.
They are our biggest single industrial heritage site. They, with the
reservoirs are a most valuable water collection and distribution
amenity for the future, especially in view of global warming. And they
represent beautiful Britain at its best. They are one of our greatest
single national assets.
Once we all realise the value and potential of this great national
asset, investment will come. Money follows well publicised success.
The canals still suffer to a degree from the image of a defunct old
decaying transport system An image which needs re-vitalising and re
packaging.
Of course this would be in an ideal world where money would be
available run such a campaign.
Roger.
