Can we infer from the position of this item in the discussion thread
that St. Petersburg produces its drinking water from sewage?

Well, Thames Water proudly tell that London's water has gone through the

Don't knock it!! the French market the same stuff as Champagne(TM)
Boy, if anywhere needs water purification, it's St Petersburg! I
vividly recall staying there (it was Leningrad then) in the summer of
1986, and no-one touched tap water - it's pumped from the swamps and Lake
Ladoga, and is a delicate tea/rust colour. The big clampdown on alcoholism
was in force then (early days of glasnost - probably a golden era for the
locals, in retrospect) and beverages to combat the sweltering heat were
lurid-tasting (but effective) mineral water from dispensers in the street,
and bottles of sok (blackberry juice, most pleasant).

Russian blackberry products are supposed to be radioactive as a result
of Chernobyl and fairly indiscriminate nuclear testing. The delicious
whole fruit Russian jams I used to buy were all taken off the
supermarket shelves.

If you look to the south about 6.30 UK time at an elevation of 60 deg.
you can see MIR passing overhead. It was the brightest object in the sky
when it passed over yesterday evening.

As someone who works with such things, the system we supply was
originally designed with fine bubble diffusers; the current model has
simple drilled holes as they work just as well and don't clog like the
diffusers did. When I service an old plant I drill 6mm holes in the
end of the diffusers.
