Just looking on getamap @ the OS site and have a simple question.
When on 'Leisure' view, there are only 4 levels of zoom. I assume the other
2 are the same as the Landranger series (1:50,000) and the inner 2 are the
same as the Explorer series (1:25,000), is this correct?

Thank you

That's what I've always assumed. Footpaths are in green on the two highest
levels of zoom, and red on the other two, which would seem to confirm that.
I've never seen anything that goes against your assumption. Good service
isn't it? I love it.

You're right. Have you tried Streetmap? You can get a 25000 map covering the
whole screen there.

Good service it may be to those who can use
Silverlight (Windows and *latest* Mac). I know
that I'm in a minority using Linux, but I object to
the use of proprietary software to serve the
public. Convenience springs to mind.

I agree with this. Not just a problem for Linux but also Android
for example.

It is also quite a short-sighted approach. Microsoft have de-emphasized
Silverlight in favour of HTML5. The writing was on the wall even a year
ago for Silverlight.

But they are not a proper company where that kind of argument holds more
currency. They are part of government (executive agency and non-ministerial
department) therefore should take a lead in offering platform neutral (or as
near as they can) solutions.

The UI and rendering engine could fairly inexpensively (in comparison
with the total costs already spent on the project) be replaced with a
HTML5 one rather than a silverlight one.

They are not just a government funded organisation but part of
government - the same as DVLA, The Court Service, Child Support Agency,
Royal Mint and many others

Thank you all.

I've not used Streetmap for years. As it happens I shall be buying the map
anyway as I need the extra information from the Explorer one (I have the
Landranger).

I agree with your comments entirely. I complained to the Ordnance Survey
when they launched the new Get-a-Map service and this is their reason for
using Silverlight:-

"We chose to use Silverlight as it provides a unique user experience on
the web and importantly, has a deep zoom feature which allows customers
to keep zooming in on the map without distorting it."

Actually of course the above isn't true, you don't get any more detail by
zooming in past the 1:25,000 maps, it just gets a little blurry. As to
what "unique experience on the web" Silverlight provides I'll leave to
you. I'm certainly none the wiser and I know there are others that have
complained to no avail.
