Yeah, I give up. Then curiousity got the better of me to see how it works
with other browsers.
Opera (my default browser): long time to load and small framed.
IE (locked down with high security setting): Long time to load, but much
better for viewing.
Firefox (noscript + no ads): wouldn't load without allowing noscripts.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else is put off by these type of sites.

That's what happens when people use Adobe's carp ColdFusion
technology. I usually have a 30 second tolerance for websites - any
longer and I move elsewhere.
That said, I like Cotswold as a company, and their stores. Just a poor
website.

I've disliked that site since it went all Flash(y) - can't use the mouse
buttons in Opera 10.01 for navigation, so slows down everything.
Just tried it with Opera: wouldn't load; masked as IE and still no 'luck'.
It loads in FF 3.5.5, but can't use the mouse to navigate, so if I'm
desperate...
Got my last 2 pairs of footwear from Cotswold as well :-(

I like the place in Keswick, but I've always been suspicious about companies
who have 2 shops in the same town. Cotswold has 2 in Leeds, Manchester and
Glasgow.
BTW, my browsers are:
Opera 10.01
IE: 8.0.6001.18828
Firefox: 3.5.5
I have a high (ish) speed broadband connection, but even that can't get
Cotswold website to become almost instant!

Oh yes, it's a horror show.
Luckily, they have an "accessible site" (their own words!) at
https://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/index.cfm??CFID=1459527&CFTOKEN=87036776
which uses plain old HTML and works a damn site quicker and better.

Yes it does. Pretty much shot themselves in the foot with this Flash
site. It's not loading at all on my machine at the moment.

Indeed. Any time I've ordered from Cotswold since this abomination went
online I've done it by 'phone and made a point of telling them the
reason I'm doing it by 'phone is that their web site needs to be taken
out and shot and is actually losing them business. It's still there
though...

Not so much put off, can bear 32 seconds, but I do sometime bale-out from a
site loading if it is dragging on. There are always plenty of sites
covering similar info/purchase items available.
The main think I always keep in mind, when sizing my website photos, is file
size and the load time. Very off-putting watching an image slooooooowly
fill the browser window.

Mcr, Leeds<spit> and Glasgae aren't towns they are cities and are
pretty big places. Especially Glasgae, there are several branches of
Tiso's there. Sometimes a store has to expand by having two small
stores, F&T used to be like that in Covent garden before the business
downturn.

Mine's only 1.5 - 1.8Mb/s :-(
IE is blocked by the firewall and isn't allowed out.

mmm, tried that before and it hasn't loaded; just tried again and it goes
there, immediately shows 'checking your browser' and goes to a blank page
and adds &bhfv=10&bhqs=1. That's in Opera; in FF it manages to load the
'enhanced' site with the addition of:
&FUSEACTION=main&SHOWMESSAGE=0&GOTOLOCATION=0&MENUSTATE=N&originalReferrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cotswoldoutdoor.com%2Findex.cfm%3F%3FCFID%3D1459527%26CFTOKEN%3D87036776#

Yes that happened to me. You have to click the accessible site link.
Of course, you can't click the accessible site link unless you can
load Flash.
Couldn't make it up, could you?

Ah, got it - had to turn on cookies! I'll set that site to accept them.

There's a brief moment when it says something NOFLASH in the address
bar. I think you need to catch that address...
See if this works
https://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=noflash&link_in_flash=1
It's still javascripted to within an inch of your life though.
That's the trouble when you let
a) marketing
b) software developers
have a large say in the design of a web site. Group a wants to make is
look really flashy and fancy, and group b wants to use all the latest
technology and whiz-bang features. Both have a tendancy to prioritise
features and looks over plain functionality (especially over slow
connections).
There are too many examples to list, though a "Flash" intro page with a
button saying "skip intro" must be the biggest waste of
time/money/creative talent ever (assuming everyone skips the intro).
Speaking as a software developer for over 30 years, I can only agree
with your comments about current software developers, it is very hard
to try and convince them that not every user has a fast net connection
and the latest hardware/software, and don't get me started on
marketing/sales!
Recently I got a Post Office Credit Card, I am off to the states soon
and this is one of the better ones to use, but their web site only
works with specific versions of IE, so when I get back I will stop
using the card and it is too much hassle to view my account online, so
that is one lost customer.

Bastards? Idiots, more like. You wouldn't think they were trying to
separate you happily from your money, would you?
If you look at my OP I state I had 3 browsers. I love using Opera, but it
doesn't work on some websites very well. So that is why I need 3 webrowsers!
The way around it is to use virtual machines. I have a basic XP with IE7 if
I need to use it. I also use a VM Ubuntu for very secure (ie banking).
The things you need to do to buy a pair of socks ;-)

True.
Although it works with cookies enabled, that still annoys me: it's like
going into a shop and having to give name and address bfore looking around.
> time/money/creative talent ever (assuming everyone skips the intro).
I /might/ watch an intro once. Mostly though, they seem to consist of
waiting for a flash anim to load telling you to "click here to enter site".
At least, those that stick in my memory were of that ilk. :-(

My default browser is Opera, which I have used from the very early

There's a plugin for Firefox called IE Tab, which lets you switch rendering
engines within Firefox, if you really need to view a site that only works
properly in IE.

On a toolbar in Opera I've a button that switches serially through ID as FF
- ID as IE - Mask as FF - Mask as IE - ID as Opera (default); on some sites
it works well.

Did for a while - might try again at v10 (about January at this rate!). Too
'simple' for me - I like to customise apps. and have buttons for what I
want.
There's ChromePlus: a mod. of Chrome with useful functionality and it's
just been updated to the latest version of Chrome
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Browsers/ChromePlus.shtml
Then, for trying browsers, there's Transmute for copying Bookmarks between
browsers

I emailed them about the poor layout, reliance on flash and so forth. All
they did was send me a link to the non-flash version. No indication that
they have any understanding that the site needs to be reworked to become
usable.
Losing my custom was of no consequence to them.

Just tried build 4.0.259.0 (33217) on cotswaldoutdoor site and it
performs very well.
Using Ubuntu Hardy. Normal browsers are Firefox and Opera.
