The recent threads about landscapes and landscape photographers
reminded me of the story and verse I came across many years ago about
Betty, an octogenarian, who'd lived in Windermere all her life and had
never been further than the corner shop. On a beautiful day in early
summer she was persuaded, by friends and relatives, to walk to the top
of Orrest Head, a viewpoint above the village. After a mighty struggle
she finally arrived and stood gazing for several minutes at the
wonderful panoramic landscape before her.

Owd Betty, who'd lived here all her days,
Can't understand the tourists' lavish praise.
"Ee dear," she cried "why mek such fuss and chatter.
There's nowt to see but 'ills and trees and watter!"

Happy Christmas

Sorry to rewrite your poem but...

Owd Betty, who'd lived here all her days,

Can't understand the tourists' praise.
"Why do they mek such fuss and chatter?,
There's nowt to see but 'ills and watter!"

Isn't there a huge difference? Or is it just me?

I remember hearing of two elderly sisters who live(d)? on Lindisfarne, who
had never, in their entire lives, ventured over the causeway to the
mainland - you'd have thought that curiosity would have got the better of
them one day - but no! Bizarre.
