Quantock Hills in danger

Somerset County Council have announced their intention to sell of their
land holdings on the Quantock Hills. The news has been met with
widespread puzzlement, horror and disbelief, that after nearly a hundred
years of safe stewardship by the County Council they should even
consider giving it over to an uncertain future in private ownership.

Particularly important at the moment is that the e-petition on the
County Council's site should exceed 5000 signatures. That will enable
the petitioners to ask for a debate at a full Council Meeting.

It may yet happen. It is very difficult to know why they want to
dispose of these pieces of land and it looks like they will get very
little for them. If they are going for a song who knows who might buy them?

There are plenty of wild rumours flying around. Just some I have heard:

EDF will buy the land to frac for natural gas
Wind Farms
Recreational 4x4 driving
The antis will buy it to stop teh hunt
The hunt will buy it to stop the antis
B&Q will buy it to make speciality Quantock Oak Barbecue Charcoal...

None of which are particularly believable.
