Haven't done these personally, but there's a small group of prominent hills
to the northeast, next to Middletown. The highest is Moel y Golfa 403m, I
think this is a Marilyn. Also there's Middletown hill next to it which has a
hill fort on top, and Rodney's Pillar on Breidden Hill. I can't recommend
any specific walks but there are loads of paths and rights of way marked on
the 25k map so it should be easy enough to plan your own routes.

For gentler walking there's a path following the Shropshire Union Canal
which passes through Welshpool. The northern section follows the main road
closely so the southern section would be quieter.

Also to the north, Offa's Dyke Path follows the River Severn from Pool Quay
to near Trederwen which links to the Severn Way which continues following
the Severn northeast to Llandrinio then southeast to Crewgreen.
