Apparently the Epping-Ongar line was kept open to provide transport to
the Kelvedon Hatch nuclear bunker, which was the Regional Government
Headquarters for the London Area during the Cold War.

This was deemed surplus to requirements in 1993, after the end of the
Cold War, and is now an excellent museum. I went there in 2001, it was
like going back in time to the 1980's.
