Sunday 6th. We spent the whole day at the Suffolk Game & Country Fair at Little
Glemham and had a really good day ...although spent way too much money as
usual! The fair is bigger than last year and I'd advise anyone thinking of
going to the show tomorrow not to hesitate.

At this point I just need to have a bit of a rant though ...let me tell you one
thing that REALLY annoys me at the larger country shows ...the helicopter
rides! If they MUST have a helicopter giving flights why, oh why can't they
have them right out of the way of the show proper? Am I the only one who finds
that incessant bloody chopper noise non stop hour after hour irritating in the
extreme? £19 for a three minute gut churning ride in some stinky old JetRanger
- you got to be kidding!

Oh yes, and who was manning the BASC stand? None other than El Presidente John
Swift himself no less! And can you believe the Countryside Alliance exhibit
failed to turn up ...what is the world coming to I ask.
Steve. Suffolk.

Yes, I've just got back from a remarkably sunny, if windy cold, Monday
at the same event.

And Swifty was there again - someone said there's nothing bigger on
elsewhere. Still, why shouldn't he come to Suffolk?

Chopper?
Picture this for the BASC gundog scurry. Wind blowing from 1 O'clock
about 15 mph. To the left, two or three bouncy castles with attendant
minigenerators. Beyond (upwind) of the scurry ground, about 100 yards
away, tops, the very busy A12 trunk road. To the right of the scurry
ground, "have a go" archery. And beyond that the flaming jellycopter. At
least the wind pushed the paraffin fumes away from the scurry ground!

Anyway, a good show, though nothing bigger than an air rifle to drool
over or spend money on buying bits for.

What was the turnout like, were people supporting the event or keeping away
because of this fmd,
just curious to know as it must be one of the first fairs of 2001 to be
run, ,

There's nothing within a hundred miles untill at least end of June up here ,
as far as country fairs go , well never mind ,i'll
just have to shoot some pigeons instead.!!

Pete can answer for today but when I was present yesterday the turnout was
really excellent - the place was heaving in fact! The foot disinfectant mats
were slowing entry up a bit for vehicle drivers and passengers but no hassle
really.

Agreed there wasn't much in the gunsmithing line ...there were obviously more
bouncy castles there today too! However, I did manage to do a pretty good deal
on a new tweed shootin' suit and jumper with a pheasant embroidered on it
.....PLUS, wonder of wonders, my better half treated herself to a new hat and
showing jacket so at least we did our bit to keep one country tailor in
business :-)

In the context of the show being in it's third year and being more
commercial "Country comes to town" than some others, it did seem well
supported. I was at the far end of the show on the BASC gundog stand, so
it's possible some punters looked at us from across the small (half a
footy pitch) ring and decided they needn't come by but there was a
steady flow from about 11.00 onwards and when I slipped away @ 3.30,
they were still trickling in.

I gather it was much the same on the Sunday and that in the "fresh"
northerly breeze (about force 4 I reckon), people appeared not to be
hanging about - one or two laps of the whole event and then off!

The clay shoot didn't sound especially busy, the BASC gundog scurry
certainly wasn't - but then nor was it awash with deadly serious
competitors.

A small pony contingent, an even smaller agricultural heritage &
machinery section, sixteen (apparently) clothes stalls, sticks, birds of
prey/owls.

My feel was that the event drew more town than country but I could be
completely orf!

I think you might be right but I enjoyed it nonetheless. There were enough
country types to make me feel comfortable.

I'm looking for one or two ferret / polecats. Fresh blood from out of the area
would be nice - anyone feeling in an obliging frame of mind?
