Can anyone tell me a source for a reasonably priced compressor
suitable for occassional use in small yacht ? High air volumes are
not required and the power source would have to be either the boats'
20hp diesel or otherwise suitable for use on a 30 ft sailing yacht.
Any ideas gratefully received,
David
I have a customer in the US that took the compressor end off one of my
MCH6 machines and mounted it on his diesel. It was a pretty cool setup
with an electric clutch so that he could choose to power either a
generator or the compressor with the flip of a switch. The hardest part
for him was making a pulley that was sized properly so that the engine
didn't spin the compressor too fast. The compressor uses an odd size
pulley shaft that we just couldn't find here. Of course, you may have
no problem there.
The compressor is made by Coltri in Italy.
An easier (albeit more expensive) solution might just be to get a diesel
powered one and haul it out on deck when you need it. I know you
boaters don't like gasoline but that is all that Coltri supplies ...
petrol or electric. So you will have to get an after market engine to
replace the one you buy with the compressor.
Good luck in your project!

As the other person suggested, a Coltri-sub compressor might be appropriate.
See these (electric) models:

and click on "Colours" to see the "Stainless steel frame" version.
There is a more compact (and 11 Kg lighter) version (MCH-6/EM MINI
COMPACT), but that doesn't have a "Stainless steel" version.

I suspect there is not an ideal solution for that. If you could get some
way of powering an electrical generator (3Kw or more) from that diesel
that would be an elegant solution (you could also use the electricity for
other purposes). Otherwise, Coltri only sells a petrol version (or 3. I am
not sure what is the difference between the two Honda models):

The Bauer compressors might have a better quality (I think they have a
better reputation), but their models (as the Coltri, electric and petrol)
don't seem as appropriate for installation in a boat:

OTOH, since compressors are (very) noisy and need ventilation (for
cooling) I am not sure how practical is to have it inside the boat
during operation. If you need to take it to the deck to use it, the
petrol version might not be so bad.

Thanks again,

I gave you Coltri as the name of the company that I work with. There
isn't anyone that makes bolt up kits for yachters except Watermaker and
even they make you customize parts of the project. Plus, there is
nothing "cheap" about them. They charge three to four times the retail
cost of a compressor alone.
If you aren't good at fabricating brackets and/or hangers, I suggest you
just go with a gasoline model and run it on deck. But if you are handy
with a welding torch then your best "bang for the buck" is going to be
the Coltri.
