Hi all,

Follow a recent unfortunate accident to my long suffer Laser I am in the
market for a cost effective replacement (cheap!!). I live near Cambridge and
would welcome any info on Laser for sale within a reasonable distance. I am
only really after a hull as the rest of my kit is still good but anything
will be considered. So if your club has any 'dead' boats that need a new
home please let me know.

Regards,

Paul

Yes the insurance company have said due the the age/condition of the hull
they would rather pay me the money for the repair and scrap the hull. They
will repair it if I insist but I could get a better one (I'm seeing whats on
offer before I give them my decision).

Paul

Noble marine are very good and replace new for old without a problem.
However they are also quite expensive and if you want a lesser cover with
possibly more hassle after an incident you could halve the cost elsewhere.

Fair comment! Nobel are usually very reasonable, don't blame you for
looking around for best deal. (..but still can't help you with a hull,
Sorry!!)

I have always had my Laser insured with Newton and Crumb, several people
have slagged them off and said you only get what you pay for, however I
recently had the misfortune to make a claim (Flying Fifteens are bigger and
heavier than Lasers!!!) and had no trouble at all and they paid up in full
(less excess) very promptly.

The problem I have is that the hull is repairable so technically it isn't
written off. The repair guys at Performance Sailcraft don't want to repair
it but they won't write it off! If they did I would get a shiny new hull and
we would all be happy apart from the insurance co. :-) Also with looking at
a few boats this weekend that are in the price range I can afford they are
worse than my boat currently is after the accident!! Oh well I shall have to
insist on repair I think.

Regards,

Paul

And don't forget that their main Insurance Company - Baltic & General
- went down the tubes a couple of years ago and Newton Crum (Note it's
actually a guy's name) re-insured all their clients out of their own
funds. Definitely not a cheapskate outfit.

I presume it is the deck that has gone around the mast?, as it is relatively
easy to remove the deck from a hull but not the other way round.
A new deck on an old hull is a very desirable repair to many owners, as all
the wear prone areas are replaced with brand new, and the boat at first
glance will look years younger.
You could resort to doing up the hull bottom and having it sprayed with
epoxy paint and it will truly look like a brand new hull

Just a further thought. If you take the money you will probably have to add
to it to find a suitable hull, which will come with equipment you already
have,(unless you find an abandoned boat). If you insist on the repair your
boat will be worth more than it was before, leaving you better off overall.

I have one for sale based in south London (2 hrs drive from cambridge).

Laser 63928
Gunwhale hung metal trolley
All the gear including Harken ratchet block
Ready to race
Sound hull
£595 ono

Im selling it as I just bought 149316 to replace it.

Oh and I cant fault Bishop Skinner as insurers for both price and quality of
service and speed of settling claims.

Cheers,

Simon

No the deck it pretty good although it is starting to delaminate along the
cockpit area (as is usual with boats the same age as mine circa 1984). The
damage is to the hull about halfway down where the cockpit is where I
slipped off the dagger board and landed knee first on the hull as I was
righting it after a capsize damaging the board in the process. They are
happy to replace the daggerboard (which isn't too badly damaged but would be
a pain to fix) but are not too keen on replacing the hull (I have new for
old cover) even though the guys at the Laser centre don't really want to
repair it because they think there is more damage than apparent at first
imspection. Oh well they discussion rumbles on.....

A couple of years back I too had an old Laser meet with an unfortunate
accident; an enormous gust of wind tore the berthing tie downs out of
the ground and a pile of Lasers hit a fence. 'In the Drink' (42865) was
berthed opposite a concrete fence post and ended up skewered with a six
inch hole through both hull and deck.

I contacted Noble Marine who asked me to get the boat assessed. The
chappie at the Queen Mary shop (not far from my home club, Island Barn)
took one look and said one word :-) to describe its condition. Noble
then ordered me a new hull, off I went to Banbury and picked it up and
that was it. I had to pay the excess (£45 I think) and the premium was
doubled the next year, but that's probably fair enough. The premium is
now back down to normal.

So if your damage is comparable I think you should have a new hull.
