Hello from south Brittany,
I recently decided to buy automatic life jackets and proposed to ask, on our
french newsgroup, if someone else could be intersted, too. The idea was to
get a lower price on a QUICKFIT XM with harness and Hammar hydrostatic fire
system. And we got it.
Finally I gathered ...62 orders from all France and Switzerland.
This success made me think it could be possible to try again and to replace
my *old* wearable VHF, a RADIO OCEAN RO 1212 which looks like Patton
personal radio for "Overlord" operation, with its all metalic grey box, hard
buttons, only 12 channels...etc.
It seems we could choose between NAVICOM RT 211 or 212 at about 132 Euros
(full price), YAESU/VERTEX/HORIZON HX260 E which are the same waterproof one
under three different brands, for 272 Euros, or SEACOM M298 P at Euros.

I think we could get 20 % discount on the basis of 50 VHF. Our shipchandler,
here, was very impressed when I came to him with the 45 cheques and is doing
his best to get a nice price, now, for the VHF...

What are your opinion about these VHF ? In particular, is it really better
to get a waterproof ?
Many thanks in advance for your participation,
Eric.

Salut Eric,

I've just bought a slightly used (by UK coastguard) handheld waterproof VHF
from Marine Electronic Services in Antibes (a British company with an office
in France - cheaper prices also than French suppliers for electronics).
They've got lots of them for sale. You could try asking them for a bulk buy.
I'll be darned if I can remember the make, but it is very good - small,
lightweight, long battery life and comes with a desktop charger. I wear it
strapped to my lifejacket when single-handing. Useful if I fall in - I
hope - but I wonder what the range would be at only a foot of sea level at
best - not very much I suppose!!

Now if on rec.bateau.fr you start shopping around for a bulk buy of a
McMurdo personal locator beacon count me in!

I'll be back on my boat tomorrow so if you want MES's contact details in
France and also the make of VHF then drop me an email to rjct at orange dot
fr.

Thanks ! I called a moment ago and a real english voice from a box told me
to try later...They called me back and seemed *very interested* in the
operation.
Waiting for a price, now.....
Best regards,
:-)))
Eric.
ps: is the term "wearable" correct about a VHF ? Not sure...

Oui, j'ai honte... mais si vous téléphonez au MES à Antibes, tel 04 93 74 01
72, il y a une fille qui est française. Mais c'est mieux a parler au
directeur, "Nick", qui sera là le lundi.
