Can anyone recommend a place where I can buy backdrops for portrait work at
a reasonable price?

Thanks in advance,

Mart

It depends what your looking for and how er.. makeshift you want to go!

I was looking for some plain background material in pastel colours. The
best (cheap) thing I came up with is to buy flat sheets for
double/kingsize beds from a cheap shop or market stall. Only problem is
that you are limited to approx 260cm * 260cm, but it might be big enough
for head/shoulders portraits! If your looking for more complicated
patterns etc. I don't know.

I've not fully figured how to hang it easily (cheaply), any ideas?

Velcro ? stick one part on wall attach other part to material

or if you want another method use old curtain rails (like swish) it you
mount them one infront of the other, and put a different colour at each
end, you can then have several backdrops available in seconds

For longer backdrops get the material from a Roll

And the truth is i know nothing about photography, other than point and
click :)

Cheap backdrops ?......

Try Ikea (the Swedish furniture/household goods store)

They sell fabric and a have a few designs that work
well as backdrops. The product name is 'Natalia'
and comes in either 280cm or 150cm widths at about £6
per meter.

You can see some of the results on my web page :
