British Naturism, what would it take to restore your faith in the organisation.

Here is a very serious question, posed because the the planned survey
by a BN progressive has been dropped. These questions are purely to
satisfy my own curiosity, and although I have no influence I hope that
the answers will give the EC some much needed guidance.

I thought that if they won't ask the questions, then I will, and as
much as I hope to get some constructive answers, I just know the
insults will fly thick and fast.

Anyway, without further ado;

1. What would it take to restore your faith in British Naturism, and
re-join (or join if you've never been a member.).

2. What could the organisation offer you that would make you believe
you're getting something of value.

3. Are you a member of a club, landed or not (name it if you wish.).

4. If you're not a member of a club, where do you practice your
naturism.

5. Is BN's INF affiliation of any use to you.

6. Would you join an alternative organisation if a viable option were
available.

I know what I would like to see BN doing, but I'll hold back on my
response so as not to influence the outcome.

Thanking you in anticipation of a civilised response.

This is the first time in a very long time I thought I'll like to take
part in this group. Because the question is worth asking.

I would like to see BN engaging government and local councils to gain
more beaches for use by naturist and also other suitable areas around
lakes, river and parks.

I would like BN to help people who need help with the law, when it is
being used wrongly against them.

I would like to see more openness with the organisation and the way it's
run.

I would like to see more big events like Alton Towers, maybe book centre
parks for a weekend.

I would like to see a BN leaflet in every tourist office in this country.

That's just for starters

Value by being a member, right now I can't see what it does?

Yes I belong to a non-landed club, but I also go to beaches as a free
person.

See above

Sometimes it's useful in European resorts, but it's not worth the money
other wise

Only if it was active in doing what I said to the first question.

I would like to believe in BN and maybe re-join one day, but it has to
be helping all naturist. You either believe in the lifestyle or your
just in it for the money.

The removal of the "old guard" and the creation of a root definition
that included campaigning at it's core.

Reciprocal entry to any club affiliated to BN.

Funnily enough, or perhaps not so funnily, the fact that the proposed
survey to which you refer was dropped is significant: any organisation
which seeks not to know or consult with its members, as appears to be
the case illustrated here, isn't an organisation capable of commanding
anyone's loyalty or financial support.

As a complete BN outsider I can only go on what I read here on URN,
and if what I read is an inadvertent misrepresentation, or even, a
downright distortion, then that of itself is an indictment of a
failure to communicate, in Public Relations terms, to the one
audience, above all audiences, to which BN should relate. If BN can't
get its message across to an Internet-based naturist-interest news
group, it's certainly not going to get its message home to anyone
else.

So: failure to question; failure to consult; failure to communicate
convincingly. Taken together, they seem not to indicate the existence
of a professionally-managed organisation, and certainly not one which
takes on for itself the mantle of national responsibility. Rather, a
delusion of competence seems somewhat more manifest.

My wife and I are members of a landed club and very happy to be so,
but our daily lives are untouched by BN as, to be honest, are many of
the issues which naturists face elsewhere, none of which we as
individuals can address but which we would quite happily help fund a
national organisation with the wherewithal to address. . . if we had
but confidence that it was willing, or -- above all -- competent, so
to do.

Good news, then, that there are people like Peter out there willing to
invest the time and effort on a research exercise like this, but yet
more bad news where BN is concerned in its handling of image
management and perception.

* Not sure if such research might benefit from some age-group
bracketing of the kind you see on, for example, travel insurance
quotation forms? We know of a number of BN members now in their late
60s or early 70s but none at all in a younger group. The gradual yet
remorseless decline in BN membership seems to us to be explainable not
as evidence of a decline in naturism but of the way mortality
ultimately overwhelms -- including all those to whom an annual
membership of something was, well, just another habit in a lifetime
now spent.

(a) Removal of Michael Farrar, Tracey Major and Andrew Welch.

(b) Their replacement with competent individuals who are up to the
job.

(c) An end to the nonsensical pretence that clubs are autonomous
organisations over which CCBN has no control and a bit of firm action
against the ones with discriminatory membership policies.

>
> 2. What could the organisation offer you that would make you believe
> you're getting something of value.

(a) Mutual acceptance of my club membership card at any other club in
the country (along with several other established members of well
known clubs I have had membership applications to join CCBN affiliated
clubs turned down even though the club's committees knew I was an
existing member of another club, so the decision was simply a crude
demonstration of the kind of discrimination I referred to above).

(b) Decisive action to stamp out discrimination in naturism,
especially against single people.

(c) A national campaign to secure clothes optional areas in public
parks.

(d) A great deal more openness in the way the organisation conducts
its affairs.

(e) Replies to letters and e-mails when I contact its officers instead
of them being simply ignored.

>
> 3. Are you a member of a club, landed or not (name it if you wish.).

Yes, but one which is a member of ABNC and not CCBN. As such 21 other
clubs will happily recognise my card (or so they say) but CCBN clubs
do not appear to be prepared to.

Not applicable.

Not at all.

This would depend on its aims and objects and who was behind it.
Provided these were bona fide and none of the current gang of shysters
who are ruining CCBN were involved then it would be very likely I'd
join.

1. The immediate sacking of that useless wanker Andrew Welch. An
inquiry into the circumstances of his appointment by the discredited
Mick Ayers. And a vigourous pursuit of legal action against both of
them, Michael Farrar, Tracey Major, and the rest of the rotten bunch,
for theft, false accounting, and conspiracy to defraud.

2. Serious campaigning in line with my personal beliefs about public
nudity.

3. No.

4. Anywhere I like.

5. Just more wankers claiming for cleaning their moats.

6. Yup. But it would have to be probably too hard-core for you to
contemplate Pete.

They need to stop giving away members money for salaried or contracted
positions which they *could* pay considerably less for, for an equal or
better result. ISTM that individuals get the jobs because of who they are.
BN do not fill a position on the basis of the best person they can get at
the lowest possible cost. If they want to run the organisation commercially,
they ought to take a more commercial approach. I don't blame the people in
those positions at all but the organisation needs to seriously look at how
they spend members money.

> 2. What could the organisation offer you that would make you believe

Support against prejudice toward naturism. I know Malcolm already does a lot
of work on this but it appears to be being done by him alone.

> 3. Are you a member of a club, landed or not (name it if you wish.).

Yes, but they have in the past told me I must not discuss this outside of
the club and especially on the Interweb...

> 4. If you're not a member of a club, where do you practice your

But club naturism is not the be-all-and-and-all of naturism. I was a
naturist before joining a club, I will be a naturist after they eventually
throw me out. I am a naturist at home, on holiday, out and about, in fact
anywhere and anytime that I think it is suitable.

BN do very little, the INF do even less, I doubt if the INF are of any use
to anyone.

We are doing. Sometimes it is BN, sometimes it is a local group, more
usually a combination of the two. If there is an effective local group
or individual then we provide support as requested but for others we
take the lead. There are also beaches where there is ongoing liaison
to ensure that they remain naturist, for example Studland. I did start
to make a list but there are about a dozen active in my files at
present with lots of variation in how the effort is divided. Some
correspondence of mine, a couple of years back if I recall correctly,
resulted in a banned beach becoming effectively a designated beach. We
have had some initial discussions amongst EC members about widening
the scope.

> I would like BN to help people who need help with the law, when it is

We do. A significant part of my time is spent on it. For example the
recent Belfast case. Details have been in BN but not yet in the other
naturist press.

> I would like to see more openness with the organisation and the way it's
> run.

Improving but we are constrained by resources. If more time is spent
on that then less time spent on other things so compromises have to be
made. A few weeks ago we managed to appoint a PRO so as he gets up to
speed it will improve further.

> I would like to see more big events like Alton Towers, maybe book centre

We are trying to increase the number of large events but at present
the market does not support them. There were many requests for a
Nudefest in the north. Parrox Hall had to be cancelled due to the
small number of bookings. Alton Towers is going ahead but it was only
a few days ago that bookings reached a level high enough to make it
safe. Unless they improve significantly then, in my opinion, next year
will be at risk. I was discussing Center Parcs with some other EC
members last weekend. At present there is no prospect of the numbers
being sufficient. However I have been involved in discussing a new
major event for next year.

> I would like to see a BN leaflet in every tourist office in this country.

Leaflets were sent to a large number of tourist offices a couple of
years back. I don't recall the exact number but the labels print out
is a couple of centimetres thick. There was little impact but I have
identified some things that we can do to make it more effective when
resources allow us to try again.

Well, this post should help. One reason I am so pleased that we have a
PRO is that there will be more time available for putting more about
what we do on the web site.

I am forced to agree but I am trying to do something about it and I
know that at least some others on the EC share my views. It takes time
to lay the necessary ground work. Bull in china shop rarely works.

I estimate that about three quarters of the individual case legal
stuff I do is for non-members. I will even read the 23 page letter
that arrived a few days ago!

The general legal work benefits all naturists.

The work we do on beaches benefits all naturists.

The work we do lobbying central government benefits all naturists.

The work we do with people like NSPCC developing child protection
policies benefits all naturists.

The public relations work we do benefits all naturists. That is having
an impact. For example I have spotted a number of bits of writing in
the main stream press on body image related issues which derive from
our documents. It is only a small beginning but it is encouraging.

There is a lot more than I have listed, and there is a lot more that
should be done, but we have to do the best we can with the resources
available.

Wouldn't that be fantastic! I remember it being a bit of a dream for BN
President Pat Thompson as well.

According to a 2008 article in the Telegraph
(<http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/banksandfinance/2786879/Calmer-water-ahead-for-Center-Parcs.html>),
Center Parcs UK's annual turnover was 253m. I believe they have four
villages. If we assume a weekend's turnover is about a hundredth of a
year's turnover, then an average weekend in one village must bring in
something like 632,500.

Sadly, I can't see a naturist booking bringing in anything close to that
any time soon :-( Or am I just being defeatist?

Q1. Not so much a question of restoring my fait as being active in
the right way. I am a member.
Q2. I think CCBN should concentrate on making every beach in the
country a clothes optional beach since nude bathing per se is not
illegal. I think they should provide, or give financial assistance to
groups that provide, naturist swimming sessions more widely throughout
the country.
Q3. I am a member (& secretary) of a landed club.
Q5. CCBN's affiliation to INF is of no benefit to me, but I do think
CCBN should be affiliated to the organisation . However, I do have
grave concerns about the costs.
Q6. I am an ABNC member as well as a CCBN member.

I am concerned about the state of the CCBN finances and the declining
membership numbers, especially in the light of the costs of the
Commercial Manager and other paid "staff". I see no evidence that the
increased wage costs are offset by increased efficiency or
effectiveness.

I'm not sure 'member' is the right word. A few years ago, when I was a
Naturist Life subscriber (and therefore ipso facto a member of Shabden,
and ABNC club), Suzanne Piper issued me with an ABNC card. My
understanding was that these were not automatically issued to any member
of Shabden, only to members personally known to Suzanne.

Individual members of affiliated clubs were issued with the cards by
the club. Shabden being an affiliated club is able to give cards to
selected members, which bearing mind that it's not a landed club and
the members are spread far and wide, isn't unreasonable.

We don't need naturist beaches. Is it OK to be gay just so long as you
are in a gay bar? Of course not. How do you stand on whites only
beaches? No niggers on the beach? Do you think naturists might be the
new niggers? I don't need to have my naturist activities made even
more difficult by assholes such as you and your money-spinning
discredited organisation thinking it can set up a ghetto here or
there. Just leave me alone. I don't need people like you who think you
speak for me, and take money from people, in order to allow them to be
segregated when they already have the right to go naked anywhere they
fucking like just as I do. You perpetuate a conspiracy to defraud by
pretending people need you. They don't. Will you ever give them the
truth that will set them free? Fuck off Malcolm, and take BN with you.

Hi Pete,

Seeing that the ANF is very similar to the BN, here are my thoughts on both
organisations:

Focusing more on 'free range' nudism away from just the clubs and dirty,
remote beaches. Sort of like the TNS and Vincent's campaign.

> 2. What could the organisation offer you that would make you believe

A coffee cup, a plastic can holder, a t-shirt with print that doesn't wash
off easily, some free tickets for a weekend in Benidorm or Lanzarote, plus
some DVDs of naturist events going on for me to share with others who want
to 'try before they buy'. Apart from Charles Macfarland's films, there
isn't enough being done to promote Australian nudism on DVD.

Yes. Brisbane Friendly Bares, and also renewing my membership with Free
Beaches Australia lobby group.

Mainly on beaches, at ConFest, clubs, and my friend Kevin's place for the

Ceasing to employ a useless "Commercial Manager" at high cost. And a greater
emphasis on campaigning and legal protection. i.e.. what Malcolm does should
be at the heart of BN, not at the periphery as at present.

On beaches and at resorts, mainly abroad.

Never been a member.
It would have to be a stronger campaigning organisation, and it would help
if appeared to be more relevent to the northern part of the country.

see #2.
I would be prepared to support an organisation which I thought was doing
worthwhile work.

I can't see BN changing in the next few years in any way to interest me.

Malcolm Boura undoubtedly does some good work, but he's one man, and
he's not creating a good image for BN. Who is going to be inspired by
someone continually moaning that he has no support from inside the
organisation and that he is overworked to the extent that it's
apparently causing rifts in his marriage?

He should not be a lone person but part of an active network of people
involved in campaigning and legal work. And the fact that there is no
such network is the failing of the organisation.

I have no interest whatsoever in going to Alton Towers, even in the
summer. These big events, as I have said before, will tend to attract
the same few people with the time, money and inclination - perhaps a few
thousand - and with repetition even they may lose interest.

I've always said there should be smaller events, arranged around the
country, especially in areas where there are relatively larger numbers
of BN members (but I was never able to find out if you could get that
data from the membership database). They should be promoted in ways to
raise interest amongst people who might never otherwise think of joining
organised naturism.

And what else is there?

I think part of Malcolm's problem is his self-imposed role of apologist for
the EC. He seems to spend inordinate amounts of time on the internet in
various forums (or is it fora?) trying to calm upset or frustrated members
down, or providing excuses for daft things his EC colleagues have done,
which they ought to do themselves, except that they are too daft. If Malcolm
was more focussed and didn't feel the need to respond personally to every
word of criticism directed at BN, he'd have more time to devote to the
actual RLO role (whatever that is).

Now BN has a PRO it may help a bit, but to help, the PRO needs to understand
a lot more about BN history than he appears to so far. His (PRO) public
attitude so far seems to be 'forget the past, let's all smile and be
friends', not understanding that unless the underlying problems of the past
are actually dealt with effectively, they'll just dog the future as well.
His 'turn a blind eye' approach seems a bit too reminiscent of the old EC to
me, though i can't fault his apparen enthusiasm. However, I am old and
cynical enough to judge things by the results which come out rather than the
effort which goes in.

Not true, and that applies to just about everything in the above
paragraph after the first phrase. Yes I would like more support, I
rarely moan about lack of support from the EC, I frequently moan about
the destructive and mistaken posts here, yes I am not going to
increase the amount that I do because I do have a wife to consider.

It is impossible, and probably a waste of time to respond to all of
the posts here. For example I was absolutely gobsmacked by nudelurkers
account of his recent phone call but if I was to write anything would
it be accepted or would it just spark a flame war which wasted still
more precious time?

> He should not be a lone person but part of an active network of people

I agree, but many of the people I would like to recruit give every
impression of actively working against us.

High profile events have far more value than just the enjoyment that
the people attending gain from them. Normalisation is a core part of
the campaigns strategy and they are an important contributor.

How are people going to be recruited to organise these events if they
are going be pilloried over every decision that somebody disagrees
with? If BN underwrites the event and it makes a loss it will be
portrayed as financial irresponsibility. If it makes a profit it will
be portrayed as creative accounting. If it makes a loss and BN ever
speaks to the orgainsers again it will be portrayed as a conspiracy to
line pockets and it is proved because these *!~##*$ #^%"%!s made such
an appalling mess of it.

There is some merit in some of the things that the critics of BN say.
Those nuggets of wisdom are much more likely to be noticed if they are
not buried in a torrent of abuse and rubbish.

There is a (admittedly limited) network of beach user groups (FUN,
SUN, Eastney Naturists) with varying levels of support from BN.

How about the beach days? Not all of them are organised by BN - some
are organised by the local region, some by beach groups

Not a perfect roll call of campaigning & events by any means & plenty
of room for improvement, but not the complete absence of such either.

So nice to feel I'm being taken notice of. Thank you. From time to
time I too am "gobsmacked" by the way the sordid little nudist
colonies (not to be confused with naturist clubs) your organisation
purports to represent behave. The score therefore now seems to be
even.

Get those nudist wankers up at Aldreth off my back, get my name off
CCBN's referrals list (which they got added to it for no good reason
whatsoever, apart from possibly their own arrogance and a desire to
conceal their utter incompetence in turning down someone who was
already a member at another club)) and then maybe - but only maybe -
I'll be prepared to help you push forward the naturist cause. I've
already achieved some notable publicity sucesses for the club I belong
to (and belonged to before that "Crowd of Cunts" in Cambrigeshire
launched their vendetta against me). You might want to share some of
that.
