He wrote some good books (and some very, very bad ones - Canal Dreams,
anyone?), 20 to 30 years ago.

Good books more recently than 20 years, I'd say. Well, in his sci-fi persona.
I wasn't so keen on his non-science fiction, but that's more about my taste in
reading than anything.

Have you read Transitions? Definitely sci-fi, or at least fantasy, but not
published under the 'M', for some reason.

I hate it when that happens. You read a few books, they're good, so you
buy 'Canal Dreams'. Then you find out why it was in the Oxfam bookshop.

I liked his Culture novels, the names of the ships amused me. "No More
Mr Nice Guy", "Gunboat Diplomat", "Ultimate Ship The Second" :-)

And having a "Psychopath" class of ship, we should have more of them, it
sends a message...

Yeah, I loved that too. Plus the drone humour. Like the bit in /Use of
Weapons/ where a character got beheaded; they displaced his head back, put it
onto a life support/regrowth system, and a drone gave him a 'get well'
present: A hat.

Also, he seems to like mechanical stuff in general; all sorst of fun machinery
would pop up in his books.

That's actually one I haven't read. Mind you, I haven't been in an Oxfam
bookshop recently.

I'm a bit sad about that. As Ogden sez, he wrote some good books and
some awful ones, but the good ones were pretty good.

I'm trying to imagine getting the news that he's just got, and it's
not pleasant.

I've read a few of the Culture series, but mostly several years back
and haven't kept up with them. Must rectify that. Recently re-read
Player of Games, which whetted my appetite again.

I'm forgiving him some of his past foibles for "I've asked my partner Adele

I quite liked "Raw Spirit" - it's partly autobiographical, partly about
whisky, and partly about driving/motorcycling around the highlands.

It's very sad.
