I'm not a *huge* trekky[1] and I find most of the TV versions pretty much
unwatchable these days, but I went anyway and the pros and cons are:
- The plot is wafer thin and has holes in that you could fly the entire
Federation fleet through, but ...
+ The film trots along at a fairly cracking pace, so you don't really get
time to reflect that you're watching complete nonsense.
- Leonard Nimoy's cameo which amounts to less than 15 minutes of screen
time, presumably to give the film 'real' Star Trek credentials, feels forced
and out of place, and he looks *ancient* next to the rest of the,
practically teenage, cast.
+ However the rest of the casting is brilliant and every single one of them
does a good job of playing what must have been fairly daunting roles.
- Although Simon Pegg's accent is more Sick Boy than Scottie.
+ Special effects are top drawer all the way.
- Except for annoying light flashes that are irritatingly inserted into most
of the bridge scenes for reasons unknown.
+ The plot, for all of its weaknesses, means that the follow up films don't
have to worry too much about continuity with ST:TOS - they've inserted their
own little "a wizard did it" to clear up all future continuity errors.
+ Spock gets more action than Kirk, which is amusing.
+ Kirk manages to lose every single fist fight he gets into, and all without
getting his shirt torn.
+ Cheesy lines are at a minimum
There's definitely more good than bad in this film, and if you can bear an
hour and a half sitting next to somebody wearing plastic ears and pretending
that their mobile phone is a communicator then it's worth seeing on the big
screen.
There's also a very strong possibility that the next film[2] will address
the plot issues with this one, which has to be good.
[1] I've slept with a woman and everything.
[2] All of the cast have signed up for 3 films.

Although I do get asked to provide ID when purchasing alcohol and fags
(despite being 28) I didn't require mother to vouch for me on a 12A
film. I even bought the tickets. The drove her to the cinema. In my
car. And bought her food and a pizza afterwards. All for free,
innit.

She bought me a birthday card, that must mean something. More than my
fucking brother did, anyway.
All that's missing is the shag afterwards. Hopefully.

Without wanting to get back into something like the discussion about
comics^Wgraphic novels, Star Trek is all about people who fly around in
space, faster than the speed of light, and interact with aliens.
There's your fucking plot hole, right there. You might as well put
wizards and dragons in it.

the internal consistency of any plot, fictional or non-fictional, bears no
relation to your, or anyone else's, individual belief system about what is
and is not possible or probable, in the real world or any fictional universe.
it can be judged only within the context it itself lays out.

Everything I write is merely my personal opinion - it's not fact unless
I claim it to be, and it's not verified unless I quote a source for it.

For his "musical career" and T. J. Hooker alone, the man deserves never
to work again.

I thought so, yes.
To transcend "good", cut out, "acceptable", and drive a bus through
"crap", to that degree, takes talent.
