You are so right. It's utterly horrible. It looks like it belongs in the
Toys section of the Argos catalogue. And what happened to the front
mudguard?

I'm not sure that word means what you think it does.

By burning lots more fuel than the yank twin.

My ex's new husband has a big engined Harley[1]. We were having a chat
about general biking things the other day and he mentioned that when
pushed to 100mph on a motorway the fuel consumption plummets to about
20mpg. At 100mph on a litre sports bike you'll be doing far better than
that.

The efficiency of a machine (an engine) is defined as the ratio of work
out to work in. Or, in simple terms, the power the engine produces for
a certain amount of fuel. Just because the bigger twin makes less
power, doesn't necessarily make it any less efficient.
Of course, it could use just as much fuel but sap a lot of power -
without fuel consumption to complement the power figures you can't
tell.

But a Harley is going to be significantly less aerodynamically efficient
than a sports bike. If you just want to compare the efficiency of the
engines, ignoring other contributory factors, you'd to compare fuel
consumption figures at a simulated 100mph on a dyno.

By burning it's fuel in a more efficient manner. HD's don't sip petrol

Well, it's not like anyone is actually going to ride it anywhere, so
does it really matter?

Compression ratio defines the efficiency limit to an otto cycle engine,
the lower the compression ratio, the lower the theoretical maximum
efficiency. I thought you had to be careful with old Harley engines, on
account of their bolt together bottom ends. Hence the Harley limit of
shaking its self apart, limits the power available. :)
Indeed so.
Is that all? That's shit.

If you want to measure maximum productivity against engine size, then I
suppose so, but I don't think it's a meaningful measure of efficiency
of an engine.
A standard harley will get 55mpg (imperial) combined cycle, I reckon
the 1098 might just scrape 45 ridden in the same way.
In a faux shotgun holster on the bike.

Generalisation no.1...
Long stroke engines tend to be pretty good at producing torque low down
but usually run into breathing difficulties and waste fuel at higher
revs. The trade-off is usually for torque and economy versus lack of
outright power. Many existing long-stroke engines are throwbacks to the
50s or before.
>At 100mph on a litre sports bike you'll be doing far better than

Generalisation no.2...
Most short stroke engines are bloody good all round, especially with
multi-valve technology, which can compensate for the inherent lack of
torque of a short stroke. Breathing at high revs is generally good.

That Russel Mitchell bloke [1] doesn't fit them so any copy of his "style"
[2] of bike won't have them, coz the septics are followers in design rather
than leaders.
[1] Unfortunately he's English
[2] If style means little more than bolting a pair of forks and a motor to a

You forgot to mention the lemonade in the dry white.
"(1550cc) MOTOR PUTTING OUT 105BHP"
Just how fucking inefficient are yank twins. How does a 1098 achieve
165HP with a 550cc deficit?
By being able to rev. That means losing the pushrods, but getting the
septics to move to overhead cams (or God forbid, a desmodromic type system)
would be easier than getting Jonathon Ross to shut the fuck up.

So you are saying at their respective rpm for peak bhp the HD and 1098 will
be operating with equal efficiency? I think not.

"How does a 1098 achieve 165HP with a 550cc deficit?"
"By burning lots more fuel"
At its peak bhp, I suspect that the HD will use less petrol than the
1098 at its peak bhp. At a constant 50mph, the harley will definitely
be more fuel efficient.
Actually, my first motorcycle, 1998 ZX6R, when ridden at a constant
80mph got 60mpg - 180 miles to reserve with another 60-70 miles to
empty. Once, in dark drizzly weather, I went from Heathrow to Jn47
without switching to reserve. Very dull ride, quite surprising economy.
My old 2006 GSXR would not get better than 46mpg if you switched it off
and pushed. Probably the cat or something.
