That's what they told me two years ago. I assumed it was common to all
online means of receiving payment.

You haven't got an email or message from them stating that your turnover in
the Paypal account has reached a certain level and money laundering
regulations require them to verify your identity, have you?

Yes. Which is why I still keep an otherwise unused bank account around.

Try getting them to release money from a transaction that has been flagged up
as fraudulent (despite it being one that you make every month) if you want to
get really pissed off. That's when you find out that their phone staff is
utterly use- and powerless.

I have. Is this something to worry about?

I thought it was 'cos the credit card I had verified ages ago had run
out of date and wasn't renewed ... ;)

Ah. IIRC in my case they wanted some sort of confirmation from the
bank to set up a linked account before they'd do anything, and I
couldn't be arsed.

If you really do need to, set it up, wait 'til you're verified, then cancel
the DD with your bank. I cancelled my DD to PP, and haven't had my
verification status revoked.

It's part of their drive to get you to use your bank account for payment
rather than your credit card. It's cheaper for Paypal and you have fewer
comeback rights.

It may have changed but last time they did this to me, I simply removed
it as a payment method after the account was confirmed.

The way things are going, Paypal is going to be the safest place for
your money, so perhaps you should comply.

I drew out £133 tonight, and my bank account isn't verified? My personal
status is Verified, it says so on the account overview page just under my
name and email addy. My credit card billing address is confirmed. But my
next to/under my bank account, on the bank accounts page, it says "Primary
Unconfirmed No Deposits Sent". I have also had on the front page a 'To do
list' that says "Complete bank setup - Complete the process that lets you
use your bank account in PayPal". I always assumed that meant to pay? As
you say though, no fucking way they're getting a Direct Debit to my bank
account...

The only thing they have is my credit card - which is of course protected.
I was even able to claim from Barclaycard when I bought something that
didn't ever show - which was great 'cos it was like £350 and Paypal were
offering me £105 or something. Then as soon as they heard from Barclaycard
they just rolled over on my side.

I had to phone an automated line and input a 4 digit number a year or so
ago, as I'd had so much (no idea how much) money through my account, and
they're checking for international money laundering or something.

I have a feeling you're in the US actually? Is that correct or are you in
the UK now?

No need for the direct debit. In fact make sure you don't. I've just
gone through the same thing myself. It took me 2 months to get 300 quid
out of my account.

I made the mistake of selling a couple of items within 30 days of each
other that took me over some PayPal limit. Next thing I knew, I had to
get verified and convert the PayPal account into some sort of premium
customer type thing. Now I pay fees to list, fees when it's sold and
fees on any money dealt with by PayPal (something like 2.5-3.5%). I
think E-Bay now get about 10-15% of any sale. When you add postage
costs, you end up loosing about 20-25% of the total price somebody is
prepared to pay for an item.

I don't sell much any more.

Well, that's just, just a bit weird really? I assume it wouldn't even let
you attempt withdrawl? They're not bouncing back a day later or something?
'Cos tonight I've definately gone through the withdraw process, and I got
the crap email that contains sod all info except the last 4 account number
digits...

Just go through it, set it up, get confirmed, make sure your 'Method of
Payment' is still your card, and then delete the Direct Debit through your
internet banking. That's what I'd do, and hope in that short time they
don't decide to do any of the bad things you've heard about PP doing with
regards to peoples bank accounts...

On the strength of this thread, I have cancelled my DD.
UKRM confirmed the vague rumours I had heard, thanks font.

Wasn't there a story of a company resubmitting for the direct debit in a
circumstance like that, as though the direct debit mandate had been
given again? I know it's completely against the rules, but I wouldn't
trust Paypal as far as I could kick them.
