I'm just getting back into playing first person shooters, and replaying some
of the older ones:
Call Of Duty 1
Deus Ex
Far Cry
Halo
What is the top 5 of more recent games - for single player modes?
I'd looked at Modern Warfare 2, which looks brill, but reviews say the
single player was far too short.

I still play Battlefield 2142 and a Half Life 2 mod called Day of
Defeat: source. It's a WWII conversion. Both are online Multiplayer
games.
Forgot to say PC only...

It is an excellent game but one that can be completed in less than six
hours.

COD 4
Battlefield Bad Company
Halo 3
Fallout 3
Left 4 Dead
Borderlands
The orginal, or Wolfenstein 3D?
If you haven't played Half Life and Half Life 2 you could try them. I
actually got an RSI playing HL1 all night. My young nephews rate the Medal
Of Honour games and they should know - they play enough of them!

No, just wolfenstein, here it is....
http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/6068164/Wolfenstein/Product.html
Ahh, another new one. I can't (actually I don't bother to) keep up.
I was thinking of the original PC game, which IIRC was called
Wolfenstein 3D, then there was the one a few years back, which is
apparently Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Now there is this new one.
RTCW was also a good game :)

I got it yesterday... the boy has just completed it in exactly that -
I suspect an old(er) gimmer like me will take ever so slightly longer,
and that given the sheer amount of bullets lobbed at you at times in
this, playing it on 'Veteran' level will definitely drag out the
longevity.
It's supposed to be a really excellent multiplayer game though...
which isn't what the OP asked for.
Time will tell if the 'Special Ops' bit is any good from a single
player perspective.
CoD4 has more longevity from a single player perspective... and that's
backed up by some really quite 'whoa!' moments plot wise - anyone who
has completed the Pripyat mission might see where I'm coming from when
I say that.
CoD 2... I've still got that, still play that now and again too - was
the game that sold the xBox 360 to me in the first place.
CoD5... everyone I know seems to like the 'Zombies' game you get as a
bonus when you complete it, but it's a bit weak as a single player
'follow the plot' game compared to the other two. Supposedly an
excellent one for online gaming though.
I gave up with the single player mode on this about half way through -
I lost interest, whereas CoD2 and 4 I completed, then went back in
with the level cranked up to 'Veteran'. :-)
CoD3... total shite; the AI on this was *really* awful, maybe it
proved to be a better online experience.

Personally I'd say 'work through the Halo games' 'cos going back to
Halo would be a disappointment once you're used to the graphics,
physics engine and capabilities of the later games - I assume this
would be the same on the PC platform. Also, it does follow a story of
sorts.
What's wrong with ODST? I haven't tried that one yet.

Quake 4 is pretty good
Doom3 - dark, claustrophobic and almost genuinely scary
If you really want shoot-em-up mayhem then try any of the Serious Sam series

He's not getting confused. The original Wolfenstein was indeed an 80s

Flamethrowers?
You get those in WoW. Not tried the later one, but it unappeals,
suicide bombers, boobie trapped vehicles, etc. etc.
Something about the WW2 ones just appeals to the child in me, as these
were the scenarios we played as kids.
I meant the WaW one, they are fucking great for burning the japs out of
the trees & foxholes.
Sadistic, but great fun.
Final assault on the Japanese islands & urround the Reichstag not good
enough storylines?
:)
Bloody hell. 3D was not the original then.

Also, don't forget about Deus Ex.
(OK, so I played it through three times :-))
The entire Half Life series is quite good. And it shows just how
kick-ass theoretical physicists are, as an added bonus.

I tend to think the original was the best.
I like them too, but prefer the "Brothers in Arms" series
:-) Point taken, but it seemed too disjointed compared to Modern Warfare.
Maybe if the two plots could have been followed individually, then it'd have
been better. IMO, of course.

Plot? You want plot, this is the wrong sort of game.
The greatest missed opportunity in the history of 3D gaming. Quake and Doom
went on to dominate the market for several years with regular releases of
new, improved versions whilst there was no significant further development
of DN, despite the fact that it enjoyed similar levels of popularity in the
mid to late 90s.

I keep toying with the idea of getting a killing game for the Wii so
which one do you suggest?
I've been wasting time playing Cursed Mountain which involves a lot of
'ritual' slaughter but the methods of killing are limited iyswim.

I've still got Duke Nukem : Time To Kill which gave me hours of
entertainment 10 years ago but I'd need to reclaim my PS2 from
Jennifer if I wanted to play it again.
Not really, MW had a fairly decent storyline to it. Rainbow 6, Brothers in
Arms, Half Life are some others where there was a storyline too.
Don't you remember 'Duke Nukem Forever'
"To be released sooon...."
well obviously its Sci-Fi, but there is a story in the campaign
duel wielding weapons is fun
Halo 1, then 2 then 3 differ greatly with much improvement between each.
Onlne play for Halo 3 is where it comes into its own, plus "FORGE" design
your own levels
and download maps and game variants from others.
We have a favourite called SHARK its superb!

I'm still waiting for Dungeon Keeper 3. I'm crap at shoot em ups, but
still like real time strategy games and play through Age of Empires,
Age of Kings and the add ons and DK 2 at least once a year. I might
dig Total Annihilation out of the pile.
While the gamers are in one thread, any other RTS ones I've missed?

Oops, I put that the wong way round: I meant:" how do WWII type games
compare..." (though IWHT you'd have seem from my earlier replies that
I know Halo, at least in Campaign mode)

TBH my experience is very, very limited. As I said, I enjoy(ed) CoD3
World at War. Fairly realistic with good game-play and a variety of
scenarios and weapons from handguns through to flamethrowers and
tanks. Trying to get all the scenarios completed as suicide level is
as yet beyond me.
Command and Conquer and Red Alert series obviously ...
