Following the recent tale of woe about my handset making multiple
rogue connections, and the letter sent to the two Carphone Whorehouse
honchos (Charles Dunstone and Andrew Harrison)....

CW just called. All their guys admit that the handset has been
behaving irregularly (bear in mind that this is a replacement handset
after the first one acted in this way), and they can find no
explanation for it. "System error" is the best they can come up with.
They're baffled. It misbehaves and they don't know why.

So they're crediting my account with £300 to go out and select another
handset of my choice. 3G iPhone, me thinks.

Result. After six months. Thanks to Wessie for the heads-up.

Why bother? The iPhone is shit. Use the money for something better, like
10 months of premium porn content.

If browsing is important there's currently nothing IME that does the
job as well as the iPhone.

If sending email's important then I'd look at something with a qwerty
keyboard or at least a physical keyboard- Palm WM device or a Nokia
N95 possibly. Maybe a RIM device might fit the bill?

Actually, for that you might as well get an iPhone. Most of the Windows
phones have really tedious user interfaces, most of the Nokia phones
are almost as bad (N95 - yuk) and quite a few of them are very slow
indeed.

The only two places the iPhone falls down are the slightly dodgy 3G
chipset, and the closed platform.

Be aware the iphone regularly grabs data for itself in a similar
manner and can't be properly switched off.

If you want a proper *phone* to use abroad I'd suggest you look at one
of the high end nokias, or maybe see what sony erricson have to offer.

There have been lots of interesting devices about to launch since I've
worked in the industry. Most of them are either disappointing, or get
canned.

Android the platform will probably come out next year. A proper, usable
phone? Maybe, if the manufacturers cancel some projects or something.

The iPhone is a semi-closed platform. And if google are to be believed,
Android will be so open its brains are liable to fall out.

Anyway, all the above have been available since before 2005. HTC have
been churning out Window Mobile devices for ages, Nokia have been doing
the same with Symbian.

Even my little SonyE will play music, browse the real internet, connect
to my IMAPS/SMTPS server, install third party apps, and sync contact
info.

There's an N95 in the draw over there that will do all of that, plus it
has a reasonable screen and it might even play video. There's
definitely a Motorola device that plays video (plus everything else you
list), with a large-ish screen.

I've got an HTC Universal with a VGA screen, usable keyboard, that came
free with a contract. In fact back in 1999 I was playing with a device
that would do all of that - although not in colour - which was
cancelled just before it went into production.

4 years ago I was playing with a large touch screen device with haptic
feedback and accelerometers which allowed you to browse / play games
just by moving it a bit. That company went bust, primarily because they
poo-pooed bluetooth.

> * Cheap data connections

That's a network thing, unless you're talking about wireless, in which
case see above, even my Sony will do that.

Android phone UI.

Well, yeah, but who gives a toss when you've got unlimited data on the

Which is off by default anyway.

I find the K850i does rather well for browsing, if you install Opera

Really? Well I suppose stranger things have happened. I guess if
google, t-mobile, and HTC have been working together for the last 12
months, have got the network testing out of the way, have managed to
run through the platform and application tests, and have had the
hardware with finalised ROM in production since the end of July, they
might be able to release something in September.

Having worked with HTC, "Shipping in September" sounds like "Testing
started in the second week of August, how long can it take?" to me. But
that might just be the cynicism creeping in.

On my phone I press the button marked 'internet' and it all just works.
On the N95 I select the icon marked 'web', and it all just works. On
the Universal... well you get the idea. On my SE, the email setup is a
wizard that takes you through the steps when you select the email icon,
on the Universal, there's a soft button marked 'setup email' which
takes you through the process, one path of which is "take settings from
outlook".

Most people couldn't set up their desktop email without a walk through,
and the phone is no different. OK, maybe slightly harder. I've never
set up an email account with an iPhone, but surely it needs the same
information as everything else: address, server addresses, server
types, port numbers, username and password.

You are right, in that the iPhone and Android devices will be squarely
aimed at the 'cool consumer' market, and so people are much more likely
to use the features. To that end, Apple appear to have hired a designer
for the iPhone, rather than a chimp with a escher-sketch like every
other mobile manufacturer in the world does.

You'd be paying roughly ?500 for the iPhone 8 gig model over 18 months.
Any set of hardware with a similar spec is going to cost the same -
mobile production costs and the mobile market place lead to very
slender margines for the hardware companies.
