The old Varta one is completely fucked so do I replace it with similar
or go for a slightly dearer gel one?
Bear in mind I might well be taking this bike to the arctic circle
this winter so would the gel be a better bet in those conditions?
Without any hesitation I'd recommend the Odyssey battery from Motorworks,
don't forget the battery post adaptors.I have one in my BoxerCup and it's
not failed to turn over the big lump :)
They also do as an option the genuine BMW gel battery which is considerably
cheaper than the Odyssey. As this is the type fitted to my K12GT I can only
say it's not given any issues either.

Depends on which Gel battery you're looking at, but my guess would be
something like an Odyssey gel should be what you want.

Well that's two votes from people who ride the beasts so that's fairly
convincing.
The one that stands out when I look at them is that the Varta battery
is 30ah whereas the Odyssey is 19ah. I'll be putting all sorts of
drains on the battery so should I worry about this?

I've got an Odyssey on my R-GS. Fitted in (rummages in receipt folder)
Dec 2004. It's only been on the optimate about 3 times since then,
unlike it's wet predecessor.
They give closer to the max output in cold conditions and won't freeze as
long as it remains above -40C.
Westco is an alternative make that has a decent reputation. You can get
them from
http://www.motorcyclebatteryshop.co.uk/m-BMW-bike-batteries-I159.html
The Westco comes with battery posts fitted. As PipL says, the Odyssey has
threaded terminals only. I used one L shaped battery post on the +
terminal. The - lead bolted directly to the battery with a little twist of
the cable.

I seem to recall it's an apple and pears measurement comparing the std 30ah
to the agm 19ah, an electro chemist maybe along shortly to explain :)
You should be more worried about the alternator's capacity to replace the
energy consumed. If this is not the case then all the 30Ah battery will do
is delay the inevitable.
I've looked a bit more and it does appear that the Odyssey PC925L is
the way to go.
It's getting on for being double the price which is a bit of a blow
when you consider the outfit hardly gets used but an extra 60 would
seem fuck all if it let me down in freezing conditions.
I'll probably leave it until I'm sure I'll take the outfit because I
can run the bike up on a smaller battery and take it for an MOT with
any old battery wedged in with bits of wood :)

Fuck off you pessimistic cunt.
I'll get around to checking the output one day...
I went for a Varta on the tart, but that suffers from the opposite
problem - boiling the battery as a result of the location. In any case,
I had to get it at very short notice (the same day) and couldn't find an
Odyssey locally.
The Westco on the MX5 is OK. It resuscitated OK on an original Optimate
(took 5 days though) after going flat when left for 6 weeks unused
without disconnecting it (old style Clifford alarm to blame).

THe one they list for the K100 is a 19 AH one. If you feel tempted to go
for the Westco 30 AH one (53030), be aware that it may be just too tall
for the battery retaining bolts to reach their threads (unlike my
previous 53030 of the "Banner" brand. This is the reason why my R now
has a Westco 30 AH fitted . . .

Well you know some arctic "explorers" fit higher output alternators to
their bikes, e.g in the 7-800 W range?
While the Odyssey is probably the one to go for remember the bloke at MW has
done all the winter rallies and Finland. He will put you in the right
direction I'm sure.

No idea. Just Google for MotorWorks.
Standard K100 was 460w the k11 got a 700w and should fit.

don't think so it doesn't ring a bell, I seem to recall the Kawa centre was
on Queensgate.... and they had the z1000 a2 and sidecar that had been in one
of the Bond movies in the cellar/storage area. The sidecar was powered by a
gt185 and had minimal steering, if memory serves me right

Neither. Hawker Odyssey, better cranking current, operating temperature
-40 to +50 degrees C

I'm just going to keep with the one that's on my K75. It's a two year
old gel battery so should be ok.
What sort of temprature range do they have?
--
Simon
well not quite arctic circle but when I was regularly in Helsinki during
winter it seemed to be about -27c or so most of the time
Not sure, I knew Hawker were meant to be pretty good so looked up the
specs. Can't find similar specs for Varta.
