Ah. OK. It dropped into my mailbox, and I sort of thought it was
original. :-|

I wonder what cheeky fucker put it on imageshack?

Still, it reminded me that I've not visited xkcd for a little while,
and then I found this glorious diagram on gravity wells:

I was looking at that a day or two ago as well. Couldn't make any
sense of it, I'm sad to say.

Oh. And now I'm wondering if I've really understood it :-)

It seems to be a diagram that illustrates the relative gravitational
pull of the planets in the solar system. I particularly like the
little side diagrams, and the illustration that you could escape
Deimos "with a bike and a ramp"

I thought that it depicting escape heights - in that its the height of
which youd simply float away.

LOL! That's going up in the control room when I get back.

Hmmm. Well, up to a point, tho I think if you are out of the gravity
well, you can still be affected by that body's gravity, so I don't
think 'float away' is the right phrase to use.

It actually says on the diagram: "It takes the same amount of energy
to launch something on an escape trajectory away from Earth as it
would to laucnh it 6,000km upwards under constant 9.81m/s2 Earth
gravity. Hence, Earth's gravity well is 6,000km deep."

One day a marketing guy (former techie) at my company called me and asked:
"Where is Mrs. X?" I replied "404". He rang back in a minute "No one answers
in that internal phone!"

It's an energy diagram. I.e. the Y axis shows energy, and the X axis
shows distance from the sun, on a per planet basis. Bear in mind that
the deeper you are in a gravity well, the less energy you have, all
else being equal.

It's hard enough to get sense out of a man, let alone when he's in
post orgasmic 'Me sleep now' mode. 'First we talk, then the BJ' would
concentrate the mind better.

The chances of saying something that jeopardises getting a BJ is too
high to risk having the talk first.

That is *exactly* what I was thinking!

Of course, from the woman's point of view, she can get the answers she
wants.
