I remember using a dinky little clamp at college which did the same
job and provided greater clamping power, it had a square-ish body
about 3" square and 1" thick which used a key on a hexhead to wind the
clamp finger onto the work piece, while the body itself was bolted
onto one of the table slots. I'm sure it had a brand name on it but
it's so long ago my synapses have misplaced the data.

seems to be a worm&wheel drive that supplies the clamping action.
Ah yes , been a long time since I have seen those .
I haven't seen any for sale like that recently on this side of the pond
as far as I can recall.
There is also one with a rack type post that you can adjust the clamp
body up and down on for quick hieght adjustment and the screw for final
clamping .
You're not thinking of a 'finger plate' are you? ie about 3" square
with side slots to clamp it to the drill table and a pivoted finger
that will clamp small flat ot round work onto its base? If so, there
have been several diy versions published in various books & mags over
the years - they're not difficult to make. I can probably dig you out
a referance to one if you are intersted.
