Well. It was an absolute lovely day. I had some long chats with a lovely
gentleman that had a 4" Burrell from Model Works (now trading under a
different name after the company being sold, a couple of guys from a
model boating club (i forget the name) who gave me a great idea of how
to seal a 40 year old model hull and in particular, Roger Stollery (head
of Footy class for Guilford Model Sailing Club), who has got me into RC
sailing and let me have a go on his Footy Bug on their "lake" which was
sadly being emptied due to health and safety.

Why not?
They work fine for me.

There were links in Bowerz post, but no attachments. They are not the same
thing at all.

Fine for me, but a short description above each one would have been useful.

No. In fact they were attached pictures in the format of the BBS software used
by the rcgroups leech.

>Fine for me, but a short description above each one would have been useful.

The post the OP made, included descriptions of the pictures with the
attachments but the BBS software deletes these before posting to their news
server. Thus, what he sees is completely different from what the rest of the
world sees.

Posting urls is not a problem. The first post in the thread contains urls that
look the same whether you are using a news reader or the leach's server. That
is the correct way to do it, not by trying to treat a text based group as if
it were a binary group or bulletin board. :-|

I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying his software at Rcgoups has
converted the attachments to links, or is it just Outlook Express on my
machine? What is BBS software? Either way, does it really matter as long as
nobody in this newsgroup is obliged to download potentially destructive
attachments. (What happens to those on Rcgroups is of no interest to me.)

Cliff.

BBS=Bulletin Board System.

rcgroups runs a web based bulletin board. They have some fora that are their
own and also repost a number of usenet newsgroups as if they were their own
(even though they admit that ukrme is not operated by them). That, in itself
isn't so bad, Google have done it ever since they took over the Dejanews
usenet archive. What is bad is that rcgroups permit content to be posted as if
it were one of their web-based fora.

This means that an rcgroups user can make a post with binary content in it
that will be displayed as such on their bulletin board. What the rest of the
world sees will be the post with the binary content stripped out. The OP sees
a completely different post from the rest of the world.

It should be noted that the charter for the group states:-
"All posts including signatures must be in plain text. Binaries, attachments,
HTML and other types of formatted text are not permitted, however short (under
four-line) references to relevant FTP-able material and web URLs are welcome.

Thanks for the explanantion Mark. From what you say it seems that rcgroups
users can not send any sort of attachment to us, not that it would hurt me
because any message with an attachment is automatically diverted to a
special folder whose contents I usually delete without reading, unless I
recognise the sender.

Cliff.
