I found this coin metal detecting. I think it's a Charles the second penny or half groat. I'd appreciate any help to identify it, value etc. I've posted some detailed pictures on alt.binaries.pictures.numismatic

From the photos, it looks like some of the silver has worn off the highlights, suggesting a contemporary forgery. The coin looks remarkably clean - have you cleaned it?

I soaked it in olive oil for two weeks and then gently cleaned the surface mud and dirt off. Other than that, no cleaning. The black bits are probably where the silver has oxidised slightly but I hav'nt tried to clean them.

It's been identified (Thanks Tony Clayton) as an Edward the first penny, over 700 years old. Great find. I've found older coins, mainly Roman but this one is the best preserved. What a great hobby, long live the Minelab Explorer!!
