The previous TomToms are still in working order just passed on to other
users.

They are certainly disinterested in updating maps. I have pointed out
the same errors at least four times - including streets which have had
present names since long before tomtom started and are wrongly named.
They are telling me they prioritise updates according to the number of
reports received, which tells me: (1) they are not bothering to check
for themselves and (2) they are slow to respond to updates they
receive. They have invited me to invest in 18 months of updates for
the price of 12 - a kind offer I have declined.
Can anyone comment on the quality and accuracy of the Garmin mapping?
It's not Garmin or Tomtom who are responsible for mapping, but the two rival
mapping companies, Tele Atlas and NavTeq. Tomtom use Tele Atlas, while Garmin
use NavTeq. The mapping companies do the surveys and bring out updates at
intervals, and it's up to the GPS manufacturers to incorporate these updates
into their units (or not) as they think fit. It might be more productive to
report errors directly to TeleAtlas/NavTeq. You can do this from their
respective websites:
http://www.teleatlas.com
http://www.navteq.com/
The NavTeq maps used by Garmin appear to vary a lot according to which region
you use. I've found that the City Navigator maps for Europe are quite
accurate. I have very rarely come across any serious errors in the maps
themselves, although the POIs are often out of date.

Is Tele Atlas not owned by Tomtom?
Is it? I don't know - NavTeq was bought by Nokia recently, but I don't think
it makes a lot of difference. Tele Atlas still supplies the mapping data to
Tomtom and many other companies (including Google).

It makes a difference to your statement that it's not Tomtom who is
responsible for the mapping. It clearly is.
I would be interested in any thoughts on whether the maps used by
Garmin are more accurate. (I see Garmin came out as best buys in the
December Which? magazine report.)
