Cold, wet and windy.
|
| |
Feels like winter today in North Lincs. Our forecast is to gradualy get better over the next few days. Hope thats true.
The birds have nested, I think. I know the Blackbirds have. What they must be going through now! I have tipped one of the composters over to let them have some worms and have put out extra grain and fat and fatballs for tits... more »

Courgettes poorly
|
| |
I brought on a couple of courgettes in the garage, they got rather large for indoors so I carefully hardened them over a week. However since planting them out, with this miserable cold weather they have regressed. While still alive only the very centre of the plants remain green. should I cut my losses and buy replacements or might they survive?... more »

Container gardening
|

We live in a rented house and recently we have had our back 'garden' converted into a courtyard, half slabbed half shingles. Should help the 200-year-old house dry out.
The courtyard is east-facing in Jersey and gets the sun from early morning until late afternoon (when it goes behind the four-storey house).... more »

I'm sure this is a really dim question, but ...

OT frog puzzle
|
| |
Not for the first time, on cleaning out my grids, where rainwater gets diverted to a soak-away, I found a live frog. I find this a puzzle as to how this happens. I assume that while small it slipped between the small holes in the grid, then grew. If so whatever did it feed on? When I removed it the poor thing seemed very feeble, so I don't suppose it will... more »

Paulownia
|
| |
Driving through Twickenham yesterday and near the Green there was a Paulownia in perfect full flower, my wife exclaimed " that can't be a Jacaranda", but it did look that good.
Most gardeners seem to coppice them annually so they get the huge leaves but maybe it's better to let them grow if you have the room. It's obviously... more »

Heavy Gardening Gloves
|
| |
I have some brambles and roses to clear and would like
to have a /thick/ pair of leather gloves so I don't
experience involuntary acupuncture.
I currently have one glove which is completely made of
thick (>1mm, probably 2mm) leather. It does resist
thorns almost completely.
Having looked in my local garden centre and DIY shops,... more »

Strimming grass, two questions
|
| |
Helping a housebound relative with a bit of a neglected garden.
Firstly, is it advisable to strim grass on a lawn/edging/borders while it's wet? It's been raining on and off and it's damp.
Secondly, what's the tactic for badly overgrown grass/weeds? On average it's about 6 inches high but higher in places. I was thinking of taking it all... more »
