Does anyone know where I can find some statistics on gardening in the UK? I
just want to know what percentage of the population gardens and the
breakdown by age ....

Thank you so much for your help! I've tried some keyword searches online
but haven't found
anything...

You won't find statistics for such a wide brief. Everybody 'gardens'
even if they only buy an occasional bunch of flowers, or take a walk
through their local park. If you researched people who named gardening
as their hobby you would probably only get those who go in for shows or
participate in gardening societies.

You might get a bit of guidance from the turnover of the horticultural
seed trade, or garden centres.

Here in Holland I'd suggest you try the National Statistics Office. Don't
you have something like that in the UK ?
You'd probably have to pay for the info though.
Maybe Gardeners World Magazine could point you in the right direction ?

Hi Jenine,
Here goes - sorry it's a little long-winded ......
Suggest you try one or some of the following:-
1) Trade Associations such as HTA (Horticultural Trades Association), BALI
(British Association of Landscape Industries), The Landscape Institute, ILAM
(Institute of Landscape Amenity Management), RHS (Royal Horticultural
Society), Society of Garden Designers,IOH (Institute of Horticulture) etc.
2) British Census Statistics (both Nationally & 'Local Base Statistics' via
County Councils) and Euro Monitor - Market Research Europe
3) The Trade Press such as Gardener's World etc. Apart from any other info
they might give you, their viewing and/or readership figures would be
useful.
4) The Trade itself such as Garden Centres e.g. Wyevale. Notcutts, Homebase
etc. Also Companies marketing 'Garden Products' e.g. Fertilisers, Motor
Mowers, Seeds, Garden Gloves etc.
5) University Colleges such as Writtle, Cirencester, Otley etc that
specialise in Horticultural Courses.
6) Professional Market Research Companies such as 'Mintel Retail
Intelligence'
7) Any other organisation that you can think of that might have been after
the same info in the past. Bear in mind however, that officially
commissioned research statistics can cost a 'fortune', so true commercial
organisations may be reluctant to share their info with you for nothing.
However, ask the right questions to the right person -combined with reading
their Annual Reports will all help to build the bigger picture.
Good Luck and I would be most interested to hear the results.
If I can be of more help, please feel free to e mail me.

I know that Verdict has published a report on the Garden Centre retail
market place. But bear in mind that their reports are probably ~£500 a
pop.

No. Although there is now a central statistical office, it is by no
means comprehensive, a large proportion of official statistics are
collected by statistics divisions in the individual Government
Departments.

Having said that most likely to cover stats on recreation is the Office
of Population censuses and Surveys, which I think has been merged to
form part of the new central office.

You could try Nexus Media Ltd.
they are the publishers of some Horticultural Trade papers, if they dont
have what you are looking for they may be able to tell you where you can
get the figures you want.

Sorry for not getting back but my email server showed that no one had
answered my question...and that only 5 messages were posted on the
forum for the whole month of September! Thank goodness I visited
deja.com and saw your messages...and at least I now know that there are
hundreds of messages posted each month, not just 5!! What a relief.

Server problems aside, yes, I meant by age and sex. IE, 40% of women
age 45-55 garden...etc. But if that's too specific, even a general
idea like 50% of UK gardeners are older than 50, etc...

I hope you're still checking back to see if I posted!
I'll try some of the other leads given as well.
Thanks and again, sorry!
