I have tried garden design software (3D Landscape 2 Deluxe) but quite
honestly it was hard work - and I'm pretty handy with the computer. You need
to get your measurements right, including any slopes. Things you want to
drop in aren't necessarily the way you want them etc. All the other features
like tracking the shade are nice but not necessary.
I would say put the money towards a simple digital camera (if you haven'
already got one) then take pictures of your garden and of objects / plants
of interest around your garden. I used mine to add wooden posts, climbing
plants, a gravel bed and a retaining edge...
If you don't fancy the camera I would still just use ordinary design
software.

PS. If you or anyone would like to see my photo edited garden I could
probably reduce the size and send a before and after photo as an attachment
to you off group - you just need to ask.
