Can anyone advise me ? How much bark do I need to give good defence
against weeds? Is there a formula for calculating how much needed per
square metre ? And as I want to cover a fairly big area, anyone know
where I can buy it in bulk in the west of Scotland area? I don't think a
few bags are going to do it.

At least four inches deep should do it. You going to need a lot of bark. I
know it can be delivered in bulk because I live on a new house development
and they have lorry loads of bark chips delivered. Try searching in Google
or uk.yell.com

Usual coverage rate quoted for landscaping is 100kg per m2

Look in YP for Horticultural Suppliers or Landscape Suppliers/
Contractors.

Any depth will do. The deeper the bark, the more effective it will be
at stopping weeds (and moisure retension) but the more expensive it
will be.

The minimum should be to have no soil exposed. More than 10cm is probably
overkill.

On a new bed I put it thinly, then top it up each year to build up a
good covering. This way I spread the cost over a few years (but I do
have a large number of beds - 10 large bags just "disappears").
