We don't have much netiquette or etiquette on this group - if you really
want to 'have a go', then have a go at Dion Heap. Everyone else does and
it is very satisfying:-) (Only joking, by the way. Dion's okay
sometimes!)

OI! PHIL! NO! WE CAN'T HAVE CORNY PHRASES ON THIS GROUP - THINGS ARE
'BLEAK' HERE AT THE BEST OF TIMES.
Sorry about that, I'll get off my 'perch' now:-)

There are. And I am one of your new subscribers.Fishing anywhere from
London, Northants, Luton to Norfolk I have just subscribed here and I am
very impressed with what I see. I like to see people helping with tips and
hints on tackle and rigs. And some debate on waterways. Very Good. I have
E-mailed a couple of people here but never posted anything. As for the
maltesers, sounds very dodgy to me.
I will tell you that trout pellet paste works very well and bagged me and
my brother 25 carp averaging about 10lb in a pond out the back of a farm in
Luton.

Don't tell me, you would have had more if it wasn't for that angry
looking farmer with the shotgun who turned up!! I bet that there must be
some *really* good fishing to be had on some of these 'hidden away' farm
ponds. Most agricultural farms have their own reservoirs. Anybody tried
them?

I sometimes fished a small(ish) farm pond in the south bank of the
Humber until the bridge tolls went up. It's only about 100 yards long
but has plenty of good-sized chub and carp, plus hundreds of skimmers.
It's one of the few places where I've never blanked.....
Cheers

Some of my best fish including my first 3lb perch and my first 5lb chub
were caught from such farm reservoirs. The constant change in water
level seems to grow specimens of many species. Being an orchard area
Kent has lots of these farm reservoirs and also 1000s of farm ponds.
Most contain fish and I could literally fish one a week for the rest of
my life and still have half of Kent left! A polite approach to the
farmer is all that is usually needed to get permission to fish. Once
one has said yes you can than use him as a reference to get many more.
The best thing of all is that you'll usually have the fishing completely
to yourself. :-))

No he turned up earlier with a ticket book and demanded a whole £5 for the
pleasure of using two rods. He did show up later on only to tell us that it
was time we were going as he had to milk the cows in the morning. The only
restrictions are that we must be off at dusk.
TONY.
Well I now feel like an old timer on this newgroup, I've only been
online for a couple of months (since the start of the last close
season), but when I first joined there was an appeal just like this, I
therefore presume it happens every couple of months or so. I for one
have found reading this group very informative. The people on here are
great. But I feel that I am just not in the same class as all you out
there. I keep hearing tales of large fish caught and 50lb plus nets of
fish. In comparison the 3lb chub and 10+ nets of fishI catch seem small
and not worth talking about.
But when you need advice I have never met such a helpful and non-
critical set of people. Every query I have posted has got a great
response. I still reckon that I am learning/sharing a lot through this
group. Much better than the mags any day.
Just don't forget that there are lots of us out there who read this
group and perhaps get overwhelmed by the experience that this group has
to offer.
And as the season has opened, perhaps alot of us on on the bank rather
than on the PC.

Stuart,
my first 'real' post on here was asking for advice after returning to
fishing after a fairly lengthy break. I also wanted to catch my first
ever Pike. Now, I consider myself a regular poster but *certainly* not
an exceptional fisherman. I know what you're getting at though.
However, everyone has something to offer, especially jammy sods who can
get 3lb Chub on the bank! Personally, I find it quite sad when fishermen
become obsessed by weights - I *must* catch a 30lb this or a 25lb that
or a 100lb net of whatever. It's nice when it happens but it shouldn't
be allowed to dictate your fishing. You're probably a bit like me -
quite satisfied each and every time you land a half decent fish or
manage to catch *something* in difficult conditions. I suppose that if I
was able to fish every day, then my sights might be set a bit higher.
Until then, I'm happy with under 10lb Pike, the odd Perch and a few
bonus Chub! I've given up proudly telling the lad in my local tackle
shop what I caught the day before - he always seems to want to tell me
how much better he did four seasons ago! His other favourite story is
how he caught the same Pike five times in the same day on the same lure.
Funny thing is, when I was buying a couple of 'Big S' lures, it was one
of those that did the trick and a few months later, when purchasing a
couple of Rublex Ondex lures, this then became the magical lure! Sad!

I totally agree with this sentiment. I have made a few friends, maybe
upset the odd person inadvertently and gained a lot of valuable advice,
much of which has been put into practise. Some of this gets rejected
after the first attempt, but it all goes towards forming my own fishing
style.
>Just don't forget that there are lots of us out there who read this

I know that quite a few people once seemed to think that the 'bickering'
between me and Dion was real - the truth is that we actually seem to get
on quite well and were having a bit of 'fun' whilst the rest of the
group went quiet!! A lot of people probably feel like I did at first -
nervous because you don't want to sound stupid. It's not like that at
all - there appears to be no patronising on this NG and any sarcasm is
meant as humour and nothing more. I've asked some pretty stupid stuff in
the past and now don't really mind what people think of me. I sometimes
get odd looks or overhear comments from fellow fishermen when I'm
wandering along a bank with a landing net that looks bigger than the rod
that I'm using, a baseball cap and sunglasses (whatever the weather) and
'one of those weird lure things' attached to the end of my line. It
doesn't bother me because I don't feel stupid when I find out what
they've caught:-)
>And as the season has opened, perhaps alot of us on on the bank rather
>than on the PC.
And that's where I'll be this weekend, so other people may be able to
get a word in edgeways here!! It's the 'much looked forward to' Pike
Angling Club Shebang this weekend. 100 Pike fishermen, a bar, b-b-q and
other things to keep us kids entertained:-)
Tight Lines and tell us next time you get a 3lb Chub (some of us have
yet to experience *that* pleasure!),

I had a chub of about 3lb on a salmon fly once - the fly was a Thunder &
Lightning and the place was R Wye, Builth Wells. I was pissed off at
the time cos I thought for a moment (OK, 5 seconds) that it was a salmon
- I'd just seen a salmon move in that spot. It was on the bank in 15
seconds, but it was on strong tackle...
Is a 3lb chub something special? I estimated that it was 3lb - that's
roughly what a trout of that size would have been.

Just thought i'd let you know i'm here too :)
I haven't posted much to the group yet, but I do read the
posts every day
and will no doubt end up posting more as time goes by and
hopefully get
to know you all a bit better.
I guess while i'm posting , I may as well let you all know
how my fishing
has been going.
I went to the local canal on saturday, I ended up with a
mixed bag of
about 30 small fish, mainly Roach, a few Rudd some Skimmers
2 Perch
and 1 Eel, although all the fish were pretty small, I
thoroughly enjoyed
myself.
I then went to a local lake on Monday to fish for Carp, I
used Spicy
Luncheon meat on a pop up rig, first fish was a 4 1/2 Bream,
followed by
a 9lb Common, followed by a 4lb Mirror, I only fished from
1pm to 6pm
as I had to get back to watch England, so again, I had a
great day.
I hope the rest of the year remains the same :-)
Good luck to you all.
AL ..
I *really* would like to catch my first Barbel - anyone know how far
from Ipswich I would need to travel?
BTW, welcome to the group Mike.
All the best,
Elton

Sorry for the delay replying Tony - I've just got back from a Pike
Angling Club weekend away:-)
It'd be great if your brother does have some info - all I want to do is
to catch *one* Barbel from a river and count it as another notch under
my belt!!
Hope to hear soon,
Elton

Well this depends on where you live. I have moved from West london where
a chub of 2lbs was huge, to reading, where a chub of 2lbs in nothing to
write home about, so in West london then its something to paint the town
red over, however in Reading people sympahise with you fopr not having a
barbel out instead.

I have never caught a barbel either and I have not contacted my brother
yet.
When I find out where then maybe we can meet up there and share our lack of
experience.

Why don't you try a little river that i fish for chub in west London. I
think that it is called the Bushy river.
You will find the best stretch behind the University of Middlesex in
Radlett.
Go into the university grounds and park at the back near the golf course.
Visitors parking costs 30p per day.
Then lug all your gear about half a mile down a track alongside the golf
course to a bridge over the water.
Fish off the bridge with a floating bread flake, I recomend French
Baggette,And see the buggers snatch it.
Fish upto and reported above 4lbs.
Happy hunting.
