Long time no post but I need to ask a question. Can an Audi Quatro
(4x4) estate 1.9 TDI tow a trailer with 2 horses?
Thanks
My initial thoughts are no, sorry, probably not what you want to hear!!
Can't remember what weights you need to check, think it's the kerbside
weight of the vehicle against the weight you will be towing and a ratio of
85% (you'd need to google it) and a trailer with two horses will be quite
heavy. I also don't think a 1.9 engine will be powerful enough for two
horses, but I'm no expert so you'd need to check it out properly.
Years ago someone on here posted what vehicles could tow what, maybe you
could do a google search to see if it comes up.

What about reading the manual?

I tend to agree.
Probably need to identify the vehicle more positively. The handbook will
have a "towing capacity" and this may be on a plate under the bonnet. I'd
agree that 1.9 TDI doesn't sound a lot but could well be as powerful as my
2.8 TD fourtrak. There are two "definitions" of towing capacity; the
Fourtrak, like "proper" Landies is rated to 3.5 tonnes. ISTR that means it
can hill start on a 1 in 4 or 1 in 5?
The other criterion sometimes quoted by caravanners is that the trailer
shouldn't exceed 85% of the car weight; beyond that you are more prone to
snaking instabilities. But, Landies and Fourtraks weigh about 2.3 tonnes.
I've regularly towed that sort of weight with a Fourtrak without much
difficulty (but slowly!). I used to have the Richardson equivalent of the IW
510 which weighed about 1150 kg, and I have two big cobs, probably 550 and
600 kg. I suspect that four wheel trailers (like horse trailers) are more
stable than 2-wheeled caravans.
So how heavy is the trailer, and what size the horses? You might just about
get away with a light trailer and two smallish (<500 kg) horses if the car
weighs over 2 tons. Certainly some people tow with the old Volvo 240 estate,
not that I'd fancy it.
Just don't make the mistake that I've seen a couple of times in expecting to
use one of the "small" 4x4s to tow more than one small pony.
Here's Simon's excellent link on "How To"; the Linus link which has/had some
data doesn't seem to be working for me today.

If I had the manual I would read it but I dont not picked the car up
yet
Anyhow, I have bought the car but realised it had a tow bar on it and
wonderd if I could tow with it. i would only buy an ifor horse is
15.2hh and lightweight cob type i guess
You might just be OK, assuming it is an A4 128bhp model. The braked towing
weight is 1900kg. Check out the exact car model on this web page

p.s. Sorry I missed your FB chat last night, had gone to bed.
Some vehicles (e.g. utility 4WD pickups and similar) are quite capable
of towing much more than their own weight and you will find that
reflected in the maximum towing weight given in the handbook/specifications.
The figure you want is either the 'maximum towing weight' or, maybe,
the maximum train weight which is the sum of the weight of the towing
vehicle and the trailer.
Remember your driving licence must cover towing, depending on how
recently you passed your test you may not be licenced to tow. Then
there may be a limit of 3500kg maximum train weight on your licence
which will apply regardless of the towing vehicle's capabilities.

Passed my test in 1989 sadly....!
What's sad about that?! :-)
Yes, 1997 is the magic year when it goes down to 3500kg and trailers
are excluded.

He is doing weel, we did our first 15k pleasure ride 2 weeks ago
although it was a good day we did get a complaint about us which I was
not too happy about but hey we live and learn. Some people just take
things way too seriously
Ohh the towing thing is new to me, not towed for a few years, driven
boxes not a problem, my last car was a Disco so not a problem with the
towing thing. I may goo to a dealership and ask them to look at the
tow bar and then recommend a trailer for me and then see what I can
find out there
