Change of riding instructor. He told me to stop doing all the stuff that all
the other instructors told me to do. Throw it all away and start again.
That's a bit of a tall order after all the time, money, and effort that's
gone into previous instruction, but the bottom line is that it's all wasted
when no foundations were laid before starting to build. It's also an ego
thing you know. You kind of get used to the idea that you're doing quite
well with your riding, and then someone comes along and tells you how crap
you really are. Hmmm. Hokey dokey, so what's the crack then? Well, you have
to keep straight with the horse. Discovered that my body was unconsciously
doing all sorts of things in response to what the horse was doing, rather
than staying straight and insisting that she do what was asked of her. More
like the horse was riding me! And then there's the request for more
activity. She just got faster, with her front legs running away from her
back legs. He said to insist that she pushes her back legs up towards her
front legs instead - bigger not faster. Wow. But one of the best things is
the way that he's got me aiding. From the seat bones instead of from the
leg. She goes from halt to walk when I alternately slide my seatbones
forward, or from halt to trot when I alternately drive my seatbones
downward, and into canter when I advance the inside hip. She comes down from
canter to trot when I stop going with her motion, from walk to halt on an
extended outbreath! Reinback when I do little more than a backward walking
motion with my seat and upper legs. The really annoying thing is that this
is all so simple that I don't know why all instructors don't teach this
stuff. Why get people into bad habits that are so difficult to lose when you
can get them into good habits from the get-go? All that wasted time. All
that wasted money. Dang.

Congratulations on going with the change. Hope you have fun with your
new found skills.
Reminds me I need a lesson or two. havent had one for over a year.
Intructors and money are a bit thin on the ground around here and horse
has been turned out for the winter. Hope to start riding again in the
next week or so.

Huh?! :-) "... for the winter", it hasn't started quite yet has it?
In fact around here (Suffolk) we seem to be getting a proper summer at last.

What you are describing lies closely with the instruction I have had
from a couple of independent registered "Ride with your mind"
instructors. Even a few such lessons riased my game very
significantly, most importantly it taught me to sense the feedback my
horse is giving to me, the communication I give to her, and also in
particular the proper use of the seat. Properly aided in distraction-
free suroundings my mare does not need reins to go where I want at the
speed I want.
Of course we have bad days as well. As Rheinhard Klimpke once said
"there are some days when it is best to get off your horse and go
shopping"

Keep up the good work!

Yeah, I read that book (Mary Wanless) long times ago, but it didn't really
click with me then. Though when she speaks of "plugging in" with your
seatbones, I can relate to that now that I'm familiar with "being in the
motion of the horse". And what you say about listening to the horse is bang
on. I've learned (been taught) to override my initial response of "she's
doing it all wrong" with more of "what's she telling me I'm doing wrong?"
response. All of this opens up a whole new world that I didn't even suspect
existed just a few short years back (not for lack of trying though).
Annoying to think of all the bad instruction that's still going on right
now, missing all of this stuff. Thanks for the reply John.

I read it several times but it didn't click with me until I actually
had lessons using the techniques. Then it all made sense!
As a straight read its a dry book, but once coupled with the hands on
its brilliant.
