The parking spaces we see here on the left of Grahams Road, Falkirk are apparently limited to 1 hour.

I only know this because there's a notice in Falkirk Dental Care that says "Central Scotland Police have advised us that parking on Grahams Road is limited to 1 hour, please park in Bute Street if you have a long appointment."

But looking at the road, there is nothing to indicate there's a restriction. And there is no little yellow sign on any of the lampposts stating a restriction (which I thought had to be accompanied by a yellow line anyway).

And before you all jump up and down, no I didn't get a ticket, and no I didn't park there (it happened to be full at the time).

Does it also read 'see here on the left' ?

There appears to be a yellow line and a white and yellow sign.

Either you're not seeing the same image as me, or you're colour blind.
Perhaps you'd care to point them out, this is the actual image I see on Google Maps:
http://petersphotos.com/temp/parking2.jpg

Or are you looking at the wrong side of the road perhaps? That side is far more restrictive, no parking at all in working hours, and no loading at certain times.

I'm looking at both sides. Does it also read 'see here on the left' ?

Why do you keep writing "see here on the left". I have no idea what the point you're trying to make is.

On the left are parking lines and no restriction sign. On the right is a single yellow line and a restrictive parking sign.

I repeated the question because you ignored it. Why do you think the
notice in FDC refers to the "parking spaces we see here on the left", when
there is nothing in your quote referring to either 'parking spaces' or 'on
the left'.

Because I didn't know what you were referring to by "it", I thought you might mean a sign on the road.

It didn't say anything about the side.

It cannot refer to the right side of the road because that has a single yellow line and a sign saying no parking 9-6.

Check with the local authority's highways department, and ask them if
there is a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) for that road, and if so, to
send it to you (they are public documents and available on request). The
TRO is the definitive document around parking restrictions.

[I asm assuming it's essentially the same in Scotland as in England in
this respect.]

They're doing very good business, especially as there are actually TWO dentists in the same street! I guess the locals don't brush their teeth too good.

You are correct to some extent. A TRO means that someone can start
slapping tickets on cars, lines or no lines. Poor signage and/or road
markings become an appeal point when challenging the ticket. If as bad
as you say, then any such ticket is likely to be overturned - eventually
(they have a habit of forcing you to go through all the hassle of
various appeal processes in the hope that you'll fold and pay up before
then). All this assumes there is a TRO in the first place.

Maybe the police were just trying to clear the road a bit and asked what they thought was the most common user (the dental patients) to stop using it. There is a car park round the back of the dentist which isn't obvious (no signs to it).

That allows them easier access to the motorway.

You moving out of lane 2 doesn't help anybody. I really don't care if I stay in lane 2 to pass you or whether I have to move to lane 3. I'm the one that wants to overtake you, I want to go faster than the car in front, it's up to me to go out of my way to make it happen, why should I inconvenience you?

You will care when they damage your car.

Anyway, I like to help others. But someone coming up behind me in lane 2 doesn't need help to pass, they have a clear lane next to them.

I will move to lane 1 if there are many trying to pass, as then two can go past at a time at different speeds.

It's NOT ignoring the HC. Where in the HC say that you should* not do
this? Where you can, it's good manners, and helps to keep the traffic
flowing**. However, the HC does not preach good manners.

There is nothing wrong with using good manners on the road, including
letting other drivers out of side turnings and otherwise giving up your
priority.

What the Highway Code specifically doesn't say, is to use a headlight
flash or other ambiguous, misleading, unnecessary and potentially
dangerous signal.

Anyone who thinks they have to "signal" to another driver that they are
giving up their priority doesn't know how to drive. It's sufficient to
leave a gap to allow the other driver to make the decision as to whether
or not to proceed.

Bullshit.

I've tried both ways. If you don't flash, they're not certain if you're letting them out or not, and take too long. So either you then can't let them out, or you have to slow down more till they're sure, or they pull out too late and run the risk of hitting you.

If you flash a little in advance, they can get ready and pull out, sure that you won't run into them.

I don't. The difference is that someone joining a motorway needs the space. Someone already on it has a space, to the right of them in lane 3. No point in giving someone something they already have. It's like holding one of a double door open for someone when the other door is already propped open.

Most drivers drive perfectly well. It's only a small proportion that do stupid things. Otherwise the roads would be absolute chaos - there would be an accident every time two of these people met.

Why bother with the hassle? Just don't let the fuckers out in the first place,

I hardly ever see a bicycle, moped, or motorbike do that. Round here they normally stick to the left so you can get past. If they don't, they do when you drive close to their rear wheel.
I'd rather have a life than a living.

Why? They've got a brake pedal, they should learn to use it. No reason for

And if there's no room behind me either?
If you are having sex with TWO women and ONE more woman walks in, what do you have?
Divorce proceedings, most likely.

Not your problem. You keep telling us that if someone wants to use a
particular bit of road, then it's their responsibility to move around
everything that's preventing them from doing so.

You missed my point completely.

There is a difference between someone behind me moving into a free available space to their right, and someone on a sliproad having nowhere to go.
Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do "practice?"

Then they'll have to slow down or stop and use better judgement . I can't
pull into lane 2 because it's full of self-important arseholes doing 45mph
who refuse to move, and it's not safe to brake sharply on a motorway, I have
no choice. Priority rightly remains with the traffic already on the
motorway. If people won't make a gap for you to join, tough shit. Stop and
wait for one.

Having to stop on a sliproad is not the safest way of doing things. That's why I let them in.

You're a fucking clown. See the pedal on the right? If you let go of it for a few seconds, the gap in front of you enlarges. Then someone goes into it. You don't touch the brake.

Rules are there for a purpose, but you know better, When driving my truck I
just love wankers like you playing games in the road in front of me, please
obey the rules then we all know what to expect, twats slowing down on a
motorway in front of me for no other reason than they think its cool are
not appreciated. It takes considerable energy to regain lost momentum a
fact the vast majority of car drivers fail to understand.

Then don't sit 2 inches behind the car in front. If they increase the gap in front of them by a car length, they only reduce the gap in front of you by the same.

What's the rule on joining a motorway?

nik.morgan

Trucks generally run on motorways using the speed limiter, the vehicle is
manufactured to be as economic as possible at this speed, changes can have
enormous penalties in both time and fuel.

I don't want to have to loose momentum unnecessarily. Pillocks fucking
about letting people in impinges on what I am doing and I find this
unacceptable, most of the time on busy road, in spite of indicating, those
cruising brain dead in lane 2 will not move over thus I have no where to go
except to brake if the wanker in front chooses to slow down and flash the
joiner in front of him.

Why do you think the rules are set out in this way, could it be to keep the
traffic on the motorway flowing freely?

Give way to idiots who haven't looked up the word http://www.thefreedictionary.com/courteous when they saw it on the LED signs.
"You seem to have a cracked vertebrae." the Emergency Room doctor told the high school aged boy. "What happened?"
"Well, you see," the teenager replied, "I was kissing my girl good-night and damned if her brother didn't come out the back door and step right in the middle of my back."

Yes if you cause an accident in doing so.
Q: If you have a mothball in one hand and another mothball in the other hand, what would you have?
A: The undivided attention of a very large moth!

Someone has to be given priority. But the rules also say you should be COURTEOUS.
People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

Fine, but courtesy does not extend to causing other motorway users any
inconvenience.

Well if they leave no gap then get upset when they have to change their speed, yes. If you want to drive economically, have a variable sized gap.

No idea why you're arguing this point, it doesn't affect you because you're
sat in lane 2 for your entire journey, forcing faster traffic to go around
you because it's too much effort for you to pull back into lane 1. That's
one of the "rules" that you choose to ignore.

I was on a Southwest flight once that was delayed at the gate after everyone boarded. The flight attendant said over the intercom, "We're sorry for the delay. The machine that normally rips the handles off your luggage is broken, so we're having to do it by hand. We should be finished and on our way shortly."

I wouldn't normally do it but the guy was being a deliberate twat sitting
almost in the middle of the road. Perhaps he'd had a bad day or an argument
with his wife or he just thought it was a laugh, who knows, but after sitting
behind him for a mile I'd had enough and I suspect the 2 dozen cars behind
had too.

You discourteously refuse to move from lane 2 when faster traffic approaches
from behind, claiming that it's just as much effort for them to go around
you, than it is for you to pull in. Therefore, you have no common sense.

>Are you discourteous when you meet people face to face too?

Monumentally, when I meet people with egos like yours. If you were as
deliberately inconsiderate when you're a pedestrian as you are a driver, I'd
shove you out of the way.

I try to let people onto motorways *if I can*, but sometimes it's not
possible and ultimately it's their tough shit. But ignorant drivers like you
pull out behind me and sit up my arse, flashing lights and gobbing off as if
*I've* done something wrong.

PHucker's whining about "courtesy" is shown to be the hypocritical trolling
bollicks that it is by:

His usenet posts which break usenet conventions on line length.

His usenet posts that contain over-long sigs.

His usenet posts where he refuses to snip content to that which is
relevant.

His driving, which as you identify is discourteous and indeed arrogant
since he considers that none of the rules of the road apply to him.

He would get face-palm for his cuntish behaviour on the pavement. He would
get shouldered off his bike for his cuntish behaviour on two wheels and he
would get his car keyed for his selfish parking.

Ignorant drivers like him swerve between lanes without indicating and
without taking note of the speed of following traffic. They enter a
motorway without observing traffic and inevitably swerve from slip road to
lane 2 where they feel "safe".

They also drive on the "ratchet" principle. If the have to move from L1 to
L2 they do not return to L1. If they move from L2 to L3 they do not return
to L2.

In short dozy, unobservant, arrogant, discourteous twats like PHucker
should be taken off the road.

It's fuck all effort for either of us. Therefore the one that needs to get past makes the move.

I am only courteous to a driver which needs something. A gap.
