See emails below between myself and this "company":

Not exactly much information is it? "Free car check" is kind of misrepresenting what you do.

No they are not. I entered my car reg' and it correctly identified my

WTF is the point in that? The only reason you'd enter a reg number is to find out if it's MOT'd, stolen, taxed, insured, etc, etc.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

It's a free service. What do you expect for nothing? Of course, you're a
pikey, so the answer is everything.

You have lost me. The site claims to identify a car from the reg'
number. I entered my reg' number and it did exactly that. Nowhere
did the site claim to give me free details of whether my car has a valid
MOT or insurance. You can look them up on the MID database if you want.

Pointless? I don't think so. If you chuck a reg' number in it will tell
you if the number is valid and what make and model it should be on or as
they quite clearly say 'a free identification check'.

But you can't tell if the registration number belongs to the car.

This check will at least tell you if the registration number is for a
different make/model.

"We also get mileage records from garages, leasing companies and

So when I book my car in at the local Ford grage, they sell my mileage
reading on?

What else are they selling on if that's the case? What music is on my

The site is offering something useless to gain advertising space. By the time you have read the bit telling you they aren't really giving you anything, the adverts have already been displayed. This is fraudulent.

I tried it, the website failed to identify essential details of my car:
Model Year, Registration Year, Engine size!, Colour. The Free
identification is virtually useless.

Sshhh.

And I'm not talking about thieves.

Assume I drive, well I dunno, a black Ford Mondeo.

I want to drive from here to Kent, knowing full well I'll pass about
thirty speed cameras.

I swap my plates for those of another black Ford Mondeo......plates can
be bought around here for £20 a pair.

I then make the drive with impunity, the cameras can flash all they like
and it matters not to me.

Once in the safety of my garage I swap back to the originals.

The owner of the cloned Mondeo plates, meanwhile, has a lot of
explaining to do.

And thanks to the "you're guilty until proven innocent" theme that
exists re motoring offences, he's in deep doo doo.

Gotta love the UK justice system.

Well I'd try several at random obviously.
A military pilot called for a priority landing because his single-engine jet fighter was running "a bit peaked."
Air Traffic Control told the fighter jock that he was number two, behind a B-52 that had one engine shut down.
"Ah," the fighter pilot remarked, "The dreaded seven-engine approach."

No it isn't. It tells you the make and model.

Suppose someone runs into your jam jar when it is parked. Someone else
thinks they have the number plate but isn't quite sure if it was a Ford
or a Peugeot. Put the number in that you have and there yer go.

For once, I agree with Peter.

That is not what any normal person would understand by a "car check".

And if complaints were made on that basis to the Advertising Standards
Authority, I expect they would be upheld.

No they aren't.

At the top the site says "Enter a registration number to perform a
free car identification check".

The next block of text underneath that (with a changing image in
between) says:

"This is the latest car check available that includes information from
Finance Companies, the PNC (Police National Computer for recorded
stolen vehicles), the DVLA and the Association of British Insurers
(recorded accident damage)."

Then more bumpf about their "platinum check".

There is NO indication that the check referred to in the second block
of text is anything but the free check referred to at the top.

What do you expect for nothing?

Really? Even though it's an "identification" check they're offering?

If you were to sue the website and win, what value do you think the
court would put on the damages?

Look at the site.

See if you can find any way the text lower down might NOT appear to
relate to the check offered at the top.

I think it is extremely misleading.

Whatever somebody happens to be offering for nothing.

If we are talking about cars specifically, I can go on to the ETIS
website and put in the reg. no. of my Mondeo and get full details of
everything it was built with, and the plant it was built at.,

All for nothing.

I can also go to askmid and check that it is insured for nothing, or
to the DVLA site and check that it has an MOT for nothing.

There is no reason to assume that something is useless just because it
is free.

What an utterly moronic comment, in context (which I have put back,
since it was just as moronic to remove the context in order to insult
him).

You've not got tired of Silk yet then?
If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be "meetings."

Yes, it might work ... Until the time ...

It is not a camera that catches you speeding, but a policeman. Or you
happen to choose a numberplate that is flagged on the PNC for
something that will get you stopped by the next police car you come
across. Or the numberplate of a vehicle that has been SORNed. Or you
have an accident to which the police are called. In which case your
registration number *will* be checked. And then, as the cell door
closes, you'll be wishing that your only troubles were getting a
speeding ticket ...

In any case, I don't see how that site will help you to find a
numberplate that matches a particular model and colour of car. You'd
be better to walk around a supermarket car park on a Saturday morning
to find a suitable match.

The charletons who created the website with the sole intent of getting advertising clickthroughs being the culprits.
I got the strangest recording when I called the phone company the other day.
It said, "You have been connected to the correct department on the first try. This is against company policy. Please hang up and redial."
