Just when you thought our roads could not be made more dangerous from
killer drivers this comes along.

"The new breed of quiet battery-powered quiet cars raises safety
concerns for pedestrians and cyclists.

After decades of trying to reduce vehicle noise inside and out, the
motor industry is now looking for ways to make near-silent electric
vehicles conform to minimum noise levels.

The potential problem of whisper-quiet engines is so serious that Lord
Low of Dalston has tabled a Lords question asking the Government what
assessment it has made of the danger the technology poses to
pedestrians and cyclists. Similar concerns are being aired in the US
Senate, and the Japanese government is reviewing the situation. .."

In these times where everyone wanders about either with an i-Pod or
mobile phone glued to their ear, frankly I think this is a non-issue
(unfortunately).

Maybe they could fit those flap things you could (can?) get to put on

Why don't they fit a bell to the cars which can be rung when needed.

There was a news report on the BBC about adding noise generators to
electric cars so that people could hear them. Why not make these noise
generators MP3/Ogg Vorbis/etc compatible then you could have all sorts
of fun sounds for your vehicle. Galloping horses, Sherman Tank,
constantly popping champaign corks, Vulcan Bomber, Tardis, any cartoon
car from your childhood.

What, like a horn? Something they already have?

It's yet another non-issue brought up by Doug..

This was 'discussed' in The Economist a few weeks ago. Some wag
suggested that Mario Karts type music could be blasted out from
electric cars whenever the vehicle is moving.

City centres would become a symphony of various electronic tunes.

I have a bottle dynamo which fulfils that purpose!

Perhaps some sort of electronic sound system could be fitted. I have
something like this in mind:

No horns are sounded so often and arbitrarily they probably wouldn't
do the trick. Just make drivers solely culpable and imprisonable for
any physical harm they cause and that should make them pay more
attention to the road ahead.

Been there, done that, motorists are not always to blame for accidents,
full stop.

You can get battery powered devices that sound like turbo over-run.

Dunno - what's the stats on milkfloats being mass-murderers?

As I recall they were quite noisy and made clunking, whirring sounds,
unlike electric cars. Suggest tyres with metal studs.

Kewl! :-) I could wire one up to my gear-changer mech.

... or maybe not ...

There was an episode of The Avengers in which a milk-float was heard
each time someone was killed, so there /is/ something to it. I forget
the details, after all it was mid-60's -- and I probably wasn't
concentrating on the plot, just "Emma Peel", at the time.

Ah now, there was also the milk float with a bomb on it on Craggy Island.
Deadly things!

Let's be careful now.
