Because when incompetent Chancellors screw up the economy and then
take over as wee pretendy unelected Prime Ministers, they are in
effect, despots, who do what they like with your money.

How that has happened, in what is allegedly a democracy, is another
question, but is probably simply explained by a total contempt for the
electorate.

And always remember the New Labour mantra - 'it's within the rules' -
so no need for any morality or integrity, then.

But it's got nothing to do with cars.
Cars are only the carrot in an attempt to throw a line to a
rapidly-failing industry and to try and jump-start the loans market.

Desperate measures from a system that's reached a critical point in its
evolution.

(another car tax - someone's got to pay for it ;-) )

Well, yes, there's a number of valid arguments against, but I think
mine was more succinct for the Duhg's of this world. As soon as you
start distorting a market to create an artificial demand, there'll
always be abnormalities, abuses, and plain stupidity, and Duhg's
fellow sandalistas beautifully demonstrate their ignorance in
championing 'green' new cars at the expense of perfectly usable
existing ones while conveniently ignoring 'all of life' footprints. In
a thousand monkeys way, Duhg's actually on the right side for once,
just for entirely the wrong reasons :)

A certain Mr. Clarkson said it was one (or possibly the only) thing that
he and environmentalists agree on - buying new cars just ain't being green.

A million people all with votes employed in the uk car industry. Less
than a year to go before a general election. I'm surprised you have to
ask. The old system where the politician gave you money in your hand
to vote for them was more honest.

Personally, I'd like to know what happened to the request from the
porn industry for governmental intervention on the basis that 'if the
car industry can have a propup, why the fuck can't we?'. But I passed
by the edge of Bristol a few days ago, an area I don't know at all, so
I couldn't say where precisely it was. As I went over a flyover, I
could see a 'car park' of new cars that stretched pretty much as far
as I could see in three directions - tens of thousands of brand new
cars sitting there unregistered. Gordon's got to get rid of them
somehow... :)

The problems with the auto-industry began long before Gordon came
around. The major firms have had hand outs, tax holidays and all manner
of financial crutches. It wouldn't have helped that a few years ago, GM
were getting more profit from thier finance side than the auto side.
The rot was there ages ago.

as for the porn industry - they got a prop-up in the form of little blue
pills ;-)

Wow I didn't know about that.
Why has there been no publicity about it?
Where are the articles in the newspapers?
Why have I heard nothing on the radio about it?
Why aren't the car manufacturers telling us about it?

Why is Doug posting about the same thing he posted in February?

See below.

"First taxpayers are made to bail-out the car industry and now
motorists themselves are to be given public hand-outs as well! When
will this excessive privileging of the all-pervasive and harmful car
culture end?

"The government is poised to offer consumers a large "scrappage"
premium to get rid of old cars and buy new, eco-friendly models in a
move to revitalise the ailing market. Manufacturers are pressing Lord
Mandelson, business secretary, and the Treasury to offer as much as
2,000 under a "scrappage incentive scheme" before March's half-yearly
new registrations..."

On the other hand, the government is paying 40% of the cost of my new

It's part of the plan to re-inflate the credit bubble so it pops
nicely after the next general election when nulabor are no longer in
power.

There is no such thing as a 'green' car. They all pollute one way or
another. So you won't find me championing any of them. What is really
at stake here is excessive consumption of energy, i.e. far too many
unnecessary and polluting car journeys. What the car industry wants,
to sell more cars, is contrary to what is good for people and the
planet and to give them public handouts to sell more cars should be
completely contrary to government policy on climate change.

Wtf has it got to do with this government - they all want to shove thier
noses in the trough.
The car industry was completely fucked years and years ago.
Does no-one remember 'British Leyland'?

At present, the UK motor industrry is in as good shape as most, and a great
deal better shape than some (step forward, the tattered remnants of the US
"Big Three").

Except that it all belongs to FOREIGNERS these days, obv.

Has done for a while - a long while.
It's why all them so-called 'English Patriots' drive Japanese, German,
French, Italian, Swedish etc. - don't see many driving a Bristol or Noble.

(And Raliegh disappered up it's own bum some time back)

AFAICT Noble haven't built a motor-car for a couple of years (though you
can, apparently, buy a nice coffee-table book about the development of their
new model) and Bristol will only sell their motor-cars to Chaps Of Whom They
Approve. How the hell Liam Gallagher got his hands on one remains a
mystery. No, you have to be like that nice Stephen Fry chap, and drive an
LTI TX4.

Posh types belted on the nut.
