Serious effects of not wearing a helmet
Ella Philips, 29, was thrown off her bike in Kentish Town, North London, when she was forced to make an emergency stop. "The back wheel flipped over, and the next thing I knew my face was hurtling towards the ground," she told the Camden New Journal ... "There was Ed Miliband's face looking very concerned at me. I started to wonder how badly I'd... more »

Dobbing yourself in via Twitter
A young driver boasted via Twitter that she had hit a cyclist while driving her car yesterday. In a short while the police became aware of this claim despite the fact she deleted her account PDQ after the gaffe, but not before people had made screen grabs of her face, plus evidence that seemed to show that she had used her phone to film her... more »

Prevailing wind
Guess which direction the prevailing wind is in. To the left is Kirknewtom airfield[1](now a Glider school[ATC] was a Spitfire field [satellite to RAF Turnhouse] during the war). [link] [1] What a place for an airfield, winds are normally 10~30 KPH mind you they do blow along the runway.... more »

Large bike shop?
My bike buying endeavour is going depressingly slowly. I've tried a few friends' bikes and I'm gradually getting a feel for the sort of thing I want (probably something like a touring bike) but I suspect to make any kind of headway in choosing something I need to find a shop which will sell a wide variety of such things so that I can compare... more »

Wiggins withdraws from 2013 Girp
Due to a "chest infection". The "enforced" rest will do him good. Now let's see what that could help.

Staple Hill tunnel lighting
I just have to share this e-mail that was sent the Bristol Cycling Campaign mailing list this morning. It's so very representative of the way South Gloucestershire caters for cyclist. It refers to the Staple Hill Tunnel on the Bristol-Bath cycle path. I haven't been along there recently, so I haven't seen the new lighting:... more »

a couple of brompton questions
Hi, I know the max rated load for the brompton is 100kg. The problem is that I'm nearer 120kg. I'm also 6ft 5in. In summary, my problem is that I'm built like a brick sh1thouse, and I'd like a brompton because it folds small. I know I'm out of specification for a standard brompton. But I see from... more »

Bus lane blues
A controversial new bus lane has prompted a commute challenge from the same area of West Hull to the HQ workplace of the Hull Daily Mail by journos using three different forms of transport. A private motor car, bus and bicycle. See who was the quickest here: [link]... more »

Newbie: buying bike shorts?
Could someone point me in the direction of a decent guide to buying bike shorts. I've started to take up biking, as a parallel to walking. I pretty much know where I am with walking gear. I walked into a bike shop t'other day, and the choice of bike shorts is over-whelming. Short/long, gel/foam, baggy/tight, material etc etc.... more »
