Can someone advise? We painted a wonderful picture on a set of ceramic
tiles to go in the garden. We sprayed them heavily with varnish, but it
did not prevent it washing off. When we repair it, what should we spray
on it to make it waterproof?

There is a primer available for tiles, new(ish) product
available from W.H.Smith Do-it-All but it needs to be
done before painting.
There is also an ovenbake glaze for tiles available from
craft supplies specifically for tiles, have not tried this yet
so cannot give more detail.

pottery or porceline (pre-glazed - shiny) which is then fired again to fix
it to the item try: painting with acrylic and once it is dry (leave for 24
hours min) varnish with ship varnish (this is quite waterproof, sometimes
called yacht varnish). Give it at least three coats and make sure each coat
is dry before applying the next one. However, it may discolour the paint and
make it yellow (parchment colour if you want to be arty).

PS: don't forget to do the sides and back with the varnish so that no water
can seep in.

I recently used pebeo procelaine 150 paints and Marabu Ceramica paints which
are both baked in the oven to set. I used them for kitchen tiles and they
worked pretty well, but when grouted (rather over enthusiastically by my
father-in-law!) they did get slightly scratched. I wet the tile before
painting with quite thinned down paint which gives a lovely watercolour
effect, but I suspect that's why they were a bit susceptible to the grout.

I couldn't say how well they'd do in the garden, but I should think they'd
be OK. Perhaps after baking you could varnish them with yacht varnish which
is designed for sea going vessels!

Where in the UK are you based, Melanie, because I've got loads of paint
left!

go to www.chroma-inc.com and see the Jo Sonja Paint Collection. These are
the best paintes I have ever used and they have a variety of mediums for
every surface. I use them on rocks!
