>silk - what do you do with the raw edges

When I did my one and only silk painted scarf I looked 'hemming sheer
fabrics' up in the Readers Digest Complete Guide to Sewing which has
everything in (even mending!!)
Hand rolled hem:
1. Mark hemline
2. Machine stitch 1/4" below hemline ( below = towards the raw
edge.
3. Trim hem allowance 1/8" below stitching.
4. Fold hem to wrong side , turning so that stitch line shows.

you cut just below this 2nd line
then:
5. Working from left to right take a small stitch through the
fold; then 1/8" below and beyond this stitch catch a few threads of
garment. Pull thread to roll hem on wrong side.
Cant draw this bit, but you end up with almost a zig-zag of stitches
going up and down, and when you pull on the thread (every 1" or so) the
hem magically rolls itself. Its amazing!
Ive tried machine rolled hems but have never managed to get the hang
of it for more than the first inch (if that).
My only problem was that I didnt centre the painting very well, so
ended up with the scarf a bit on the narrow side - it was a day school
class and you had to keep moving or you got a step behind everyone
else so there wasnt time for those of us with older brains to operate
them properly!
Good luck
Sally.
