About 8 years ago C4 showed a US Rockfarce style drama - seemed to be a
continuation of Sly's Cliffhanger , but without the attractive dark haired
young lady from Northern Exposure.
Anyone remember what it was called?

I've never been bothered to spend 3 quid to hire it out. Does not seem worth
the money. I'm waiting for it to come out on Five.

I heard rumours of Cruise finaly getting rid of the rights or something, but
I could be wrong. I heard as well somewhere that in the film in order to
avoid a lot of off voice (Simpson thinking while sinking) they were going to
provide the actors with 2 way radios!. Fantastic twist!

A few months ago I went to a book reading session, where Joe simpson
read from his latest book. (can't remember the title, but it's the one
where he talks about his attempt at the Eiger north face.)
Anyway, he said when asked by someone, that he kept selling the
filmrights to companies for a limited time, in which say normally figure
out that it's too hard to turn the story into a blockbuster. So nothing
ever came from it in terms of a movie. They did however make
documentary, which Joe said would be ready for Cannes this year.

Ah, that must be the one Martin Carpenter identified. Thanks! I seem to
remember seeing a photo or two in "TBS" of the re-enactment.

I have thought about it, but have only ever made it to the Salford Uni
wall. I am a beginner and have just bought my first ever pair of
climbing shoes. I have yet to climb outside for the first time. Is the
North West Face better than Salford?
What I find at Salford is a lack of people at a similarly pathetic level
as me. Probably, because it's a unversity wall and early summer is the
wrong time to start, when all the students go home. Most people seem to
do bouldering, which I believe is really good practise for roped
climbing as well, but I'd also like to get a bit higher up, to get used
to not being able to jump of every time I run out of confidence.

Well, I haven't been to the Salford wall, but I'd be surprised if it's as
good as the NWF. People come from a long way away to train at the NWF, and
it's quite beginner-friendly. I started climbing there, a few years ago.

So, try to get along on a Wednesday evening (7:30 onwards), and meet the
u.r.c posse. There were nine of us there last night, but if the weather's
really good, we sometimes meet at a crag instead, so best to check here
first. Ask at the desk for the old blondy beardy baldy git, and they'll
know where to point you. Don't get your hopes up about the quality of the
beer afterwards, though.

went to see Cliffhanger with the Karabiner Club, my how the howls of
derision annoyed Joe Public (fortunately not many of them in there!)
I ask because of a conversation in the pub about Rockfarce (my fave this
series - better not move the casualty, even though an unsecured Landrover is
balanced above him & you) turned into a general 'climbing on the telly'
chat. I mentioned 'Extreme' but couldn't remember the name of it , no-one
else seemed to have heard of it.
The only thing I do remember about Extreme was the team leader always seemed
to be wearing the same Patagonia shirt in every episode (I too have the same
shirt, very ancient but very nice - a Prussian Blue checked one, very
tasteful). I must point out that my ownership of said shirt predates Extreme
rather than me trying to emulate Mr Brolin.

Right. Thank Crom that they didn't make it into a dramatic release.
There are very few American directors and producers that I would trust
with that project. Maybe John Sayles. I'm still waiting for the next
half believable climbing film. Though K-2 was a bit overwrought
(Michael Bein from the Terminator series), it at least didn't contain
full blown cliff jumping onto ice axes and crampons with nitroglycerin
and helicopter blades swinging at heads. And the part in VertLim with
the rope cutting. I mean the first part. I almost expected the father
to tell his son, "Cut yourself out of the scene. It can't take all of
our weight."
