coolant loss

noticed my coolant is down to just above the minimum marker. 2 weeks ago
it was just under the max marker.
I'm guessing I have a leak somewhere ?
Never had to fix anything like this before any ideas where to start.
I did have a look around the hoses and couldn't see anything blarringly
obvious. But I guess it the level is low it must be losing it somewhere.
In 3 years of owning it I've never had to touch the coolant untill now.
I'll top it up today when I buy some g12 coolant and monitor is closely.
MAybe run the engine at temperature and watch for any hissing or slow
coolant leaks from the likely hoses.

VW group that we are talking about a VAG car here.
I think, in the absence of any obvious leaks anywhere I'd remove the
undertray from the engine and see if any signs existed on the lower reaches
of the engine. If nothing visible, I'd then take the vehicle for a short run
and leave it parked somewhere where the leakage would be apparent on the
ground underneath. This should give you a clue as to what is leaking by
assessing the likely leaking item from the probable path of the leaking
coolant.
Best of luck. Depending what model you have VAG place things like thermostat
housings and waterpumps in some very difficult to reach locations.

2001 azd engine car.
I've topped up and will have a checked of all mentionined.
I've done so much work to the car this year to keeping it running and
thought I was all done for winter :) ... I wish
Aparantly the waterpump is a likely suspect for weakness on this car I read.
I'll give the thermostat housing a good check and the coolant
temperautre sensor area a check and all the pipes.
Thanks for putting me on the right train of thought of what to look for.
